What pisses you off the most about mountain biking?

For me, it’s constantly breaking stuff and having to put money into keeping my bike running well. Sometimes it seems like this sport is a massive black hole devouring all of my resources!

How about you, what pisses you off the most about mountain biking?

    • #95236

Being off when the weather sucks and having to work on the good riding days. If you think MTBs are expensive go get a 450cc Motocross bike. Gear + Dr Bills = poorhouse. When it comes to our hobbies we just have to rub our neck and write a check or work on the honey do list. 😄 Later,

I’m with Fat Billy on this one. Its frustrating to watch what little nice winter weather we have go by and my boss owns me then. I have yet to get the weather man, or shall we say higher forces, to allocate me good weather on the weekend when I can actually use it. This Sunday is looking real promising in my neck of the woods, if it doesn’t snow tonight and muck everything up then. Bring on Spring. 😀

    • #95238

I hate that the weather seems to hate me as well.

I hate people who KNOWINGLY ride around obstacles they dont want to ride. Too much trail work from volunteers go into these trails for lazy douchebags to ruin it. (its hard to blame noobs when they simply dont know)

I hate being a noob and putting a price on everything. Lesson learned quickly.

I hate not being able to keep up with people half my age because I was a lazy bastard. 😳

I hate it when my g/f gives me flak about riding all the time.

I love it when my g/f makes me feel bad for riding……….so I leave an hour later with my bike to show my g/f who is more important. 😆

Dude, maybe you need a different bike…I very seldom break stuff and my only money pit is upgrades and general maintenance items like tires, chains, cassettes brake pads, etc…

What pisses me off is the few hikers and equestrians who make trail access issues…not all of them, but you know the ones I mean.

Do you know how much a cassette and chain costs man? That’s a lot of $$, even for the cheap stuff!

Add in tires, tubes, brake pads, derailleur hangers, the odd derailleur here and there from a rock, worn out grips, worn out cables, worn out brakes, tacoed wheels… Pedals that have been pedaled for way too many miles, snapped cranksets, leaky forks, wallowed out pivots, leaky shocks…. and then a broken frame every once in a blue moon. Man, I’ve worn out or broken just about everything that can be broken on a mountain bike, and it’s not the bike (s) fault! Stuff just doesn’t last forever.

I agree with you guys on the weather! I’ve not been having a good winter of riding. Like you CCR, whenever I’ve got the time, the weather doesn’t cooperate, but when I’m busy, you can bet its going to be nice outside!

I have to agree on the weather not cooperating with my wanting to ride. Of course most the "good" trails here are under several feet of snow still anyway, but the lower ones are still ridable. 😉

I also am pissed off at the people who think they need to close access to trails cuz they think they are the only ones who can "properly" appreciate it. 😈

    • #95246

This is what I hate! While doing trail work a rider (WHO NEVER DOES TRAIL WORK) stops to say, "Uhh ya know the section with this or that uhhhh? Yeah, it needs some cleaning up. How about fixin’ that up guys hun?" Then rides on his merry way.

      Rat bastards!!

I know everyone doesn’t have tons of time to work on the trails, but squeeze something in will ya. If anything, donate supplies, cash, something. These trails don’t maintain themselves.

YES, definitely that! Oh man, that really gets me riled. If I see singletrack, I want to pedal it!

    • #95258

How about this? We could mark MTB trails with MBT tracks and human defication ON the trail. Horse trails are marked with hoof prints and horses don’t go into the woods to poo. Just an idea. Apon thinking about it, I say never mind. A MTB rider relieving themsevles on a nice singletrack would not be a pretty sight and we don’t eat hay so the yuk factor would outweigh us marking the trail. What horses do to a trail ruin it so that pisses me off. Being restricted from good singletrack pisses me off. Hold it , I’d better stop the list before I get started because the server and band width may be limited. 😄 Later,

When "wilderness areas" were first designated there was no mentions about bikes. I had someone say they do not include them because of they give a mechanical advantage. My reply was "so don’t snow shoes and x/c skis"

    • #95260

I hate when winter comes around and it snows so much I can’t ride my local trails.
      Snowboard season!!
I also hate that when the season in Tahoe is so terrible I result to riding really good dirt in Auburn instead of taking advantage of the terrible snow conditions in January/February. 😄
Can’t the weather figure it out?

Right you are. The actual wording of the wilderness act uses the word "mechanized" which a MTB clearly is. However, MTBs didn’t exist at the time and the point the author of the bill was trying to make was actually "motorized." The father of the wilderness act specifically tried to clarify the meaning of "mechanized" when he wrote "a means of conveyance other than human powered." That clearly leaves things open to bikes as well as cross country skis. However, powerful lobbies hostile to MTBs have since influenced the situation so that they don’t have to share all in the name of preservation.

What pisses me off the most is when these "wilderness advocates" beg the question by saying "would you rather have more wilderness and preserve our wild lands or have rampant development and destruction?" If we choose wilderness, they win the argument because we agree with them. If we choose the alternative, they win by proving we’re hostile to preservation, thus discounting our voice. The fallacy here is that there is a myriad of ways of preserving wild spaces that would also preserve MTB access. There are national scenic areas, designated roadless areas, national recreation trais, come up with some new designation that preserves land but doesn’t ban MTBs, or of course, we could open wilderness to bikes as per the originally applied definition of "mechanized"–then wilderness advocates would have a whole new lobby on their side helping strengthen a common voice. Unfortunately, they have been able to ge what they want without our help, so they have no incentive to look for additional inclusion.

    • #95262

Last time I checked a snowshoe or ski binding could be classified as mechanized. Some ice and rock climbing gear could also fall in that area.

If it was true "wilderness" why is there a man made trail?

I’m with you Brian. Aren’t nails and screws, paint and post hole diggers mechanized or mechanically derived for signage? For that matter, how about boot laces with metal eyelets, belts, cell phones in your pack – woops pack? Now that’s a plethora of mechanization.
If we are going to sub define everything – I say no signs, no trail cleaning with anything mechanical, and you have to wear only hides and moccasins. The whole wilderness thing is contrived and designed to "protect" hiker’s private paradise from other user groups. Horse back riders get a "bye" since they were in on it early.

    • #95270

For me, the main irritant is breaking stuff. I think this has to do with rider size and weight. I have friends who are around 150 pounds and they never break stuff. But I’m 200 and Im constantly fixing/replacing stuff.

    • #95271

      I’m 200 and I seldom break stuff.

Part of it is also riding style.

    • #95272

Riding with a club like I do, I see a lot of variation in how riders hold themselves on the bike. You can definitely hit things hard, or finesse it a little..

For example, we have a couple of guys who flat every.single.ride… sometimes more than once.

    • #95273

Riding style is a big part for sure. I had a friend in college that would STOMP his landings, even just simple bunny hops off/onto curbs. He bent a set of DK 3-piece BMX cranks in a week!!! And he weighed, [i:mmzdh7d6]maybe[/i:mmzdh7d6], 150lbs after a big meal. He just didn’t understand how to land softly.

Sometimes I think it really depends on the quality of the gear. I used to taco rims all of the time until I went FS and got a modern set of AM wheels.

    • #95275

Rth009,what have/are you breaking?I weigh 300 plbs.,I don’t beak stuff because of my weight.I rode MX as a kid and was pretty good at freestyle tricks and dirt jumps,I did break a BMX frame once, although that was because it was a race frame and since it was my first Bmx bike I didn’t realize what I was doing.Once I bought a frame that would handle the dirt jumping I never had a problem. And the other reason I broke frame was because I cased the landing on flat landing off a straight up jump, although I could’nt have weighed more than 130 back then so I seriously doubt my weight had anything to do with it…When I see riders slamming stuff,I always want to tell them to ride more cat like,if your really riding with a purpouse you won’t slam the bike, that’s the same thing as putting your bike/parts on the work bench and pounding it with a hammer.Bikes are just like money, you should make it last by not slamming your checking account, hahahhhaahaa. So if you have a bike that has the durability that is needed for your riding purpouse and your in the right frame of mind then you shouldn’t have a problem breaking stuff.

    • #95276

My biggest peeve is people who can’t wait for the trails to dry out! Out here in the west trails get ruined when ridden wet. Why can’t they wait until the trails are dry? It’ll really piss me off when we start losing trails because of these morons.

I don’t think I saw this response in the thread:

It really pisses me off when you have half a dozen people who want to go for a ride. Two of them cancel the day before, two of them cancel a couple of hours before and two of them don’t show up. You end up riding alone, in the dark, in the middle of nowhere. Which is nice until you crash :S

I hate it when people bail on you like that. If you don’t want to do it, don’t say you will.

Oh dude, I definitely agree! I’m one of those people that if you say you’re going to be somewhere, you’d better be there, and at least 5 minutes early!

Yup! If I say I’m going on a ride, I am there (ready to ride) ten minutes before we’re planning on leaving.

run around Saturday morning to get a bunch of stuff done, know the rain is coming for late afternoon. Get the things taken care of by 11, start loading up and the sky opens up with thunder and rain……guess I won’t ride this weekend.

I think you posted on the wrong post…. 😆

Sometimes I’m guilty of the not acknowledging people thing. But that is only when I’m in the zone and I didn’t even realize you were there. 😏

Nah he’s pissed off! I would be too….

Did a short ride on Fri, but I’m pissed it rained all weekend too

Our forecast in VA sucks right now. We’re looking at 40s and a slight chance of rain throughout this week and next. We woke up Sunday morning to a dusting of snow. WTF!? get warm already!!

I know what you mean. Cold and spitting snow this morning. Snow and cherry blossoms just don’t mix well 😆
After 75 degree weather last week, I couldn’t even force myself on the bike this weekend with 30 -40 degree highs. Suppose to be back in the 60s by the weekend thank goodness.

    • #95318

This time of year it is hard to stick to my 50 degree rule. If it don’t get to 50 sometime during the ride there is no ride. Old? Yes!, Fat? Yes!, Slow? Yes!, Hate Cold Weather? YES! 😄 Later,

    • #95319

I’m pissed off right now because I got a gnarly cough from riding a week or so ago and it’s not going away,I think I see a Drs. Appt. Coming this week, 😢

Oh,and the 26 fires we’ve already had this year burnin up everything, looks like it’s gonna be a long summer here in Colorado for fires, blahhh.Last year this time we only had 3 fires, 😮 😮 😮 😮

😆 That’s similar to our Monday night ride rule too. If its not 50 during the day, we don’t ride. Unless of course you feel like riding anyway.
It was 47 yesterday and I bailed. Not sure if my riding partner went or not. If he did, I am sure I’ll hear about being a wuss later on. 😆

    • #95321

Wuss is as Wuss does! 😆 😄 Later,

pisssed off 3 days of hard, heavy rain, temps dropped with more rain this week. Trails are just to muddy to ride. Maybe I should try kayaking them? 😆

    • #95323

I rode yesterday evening after work…it was miserably cold. I was pissed the whole ride that I made myself do it. I couldn’t load the bike quick enough when I got back to the parking lot covered in sweat and freezing. I’ll probably do the same tonight 😄

    • #95324

Got my bike stolen this morning…..So I’d have to say thats what pissed me off the most.

Plan on riding sweep behind the Dragons Tale race Sunday. At least I will be where the fast guys was 😆

    • #95327

I was all excited for a long weekend at FATS last week and the rain forecast had us breaking camp and heading home on Saturday without a ride.

No worries – it’s spring break, I’ll still get lots of riding in, right? Nothing doing. I got one short evening ride in in the last four days. It’s finally clearing up tomorrow. At least our Florida trails get better when wet.

    • #95328

live 10 min from FATS, we had about 5 inches of rain since Saturday 😢 I am hoping that some of the other trails will be in riding condition by Sunday. Creek crossings are my big concern.

I would be pissed if I went somewhere and the trails were not open. However I thank you for following good trail ethics. Really pisses me off when local go out and ride mucky trails, most of these riders do not help maintain them.

    • #95329

Can we have some of that rain? It’s dry as a bone here…too dry. 😕

    • #95330

Spring time in Georgia= Dust, Pollen, Rain, Mud. Repeat. Just saying. 😄 Later,

    • #95331

Springtime in Wyoming=3 more inches of snow expected today. That pisses me off

    • #95332

I think what bothers me the most about biking around this area (apart from a miserably long winter) is the absolute lack of trail maintenance. We’ve actually got a city-payed Conservation authority that’s supposed to maintain trails and over the past 3 years my friend and I have done more maintenance. Him and I have cleared entire fallen trees (and we get TONS of fallen trees on the trails) with only our hands, and in the once in a blue moon those clowns do show up, all they do is tell us "you’re not allowed to ride here, it damages the trail" (this was after they cut down half the forest for a new subdivision, and another part for a maintenance pathway to drive down into the trail).

Then there was the bridge that they etched 2008 into when it was built in 2009…

Then there was the two other bridges they built for hikers only (HA!) that were washed away in less than two weeks…

Yeah, maintenance around here is a big sore spot.

    • #95333

      OH!

And when I spend hours tuning my bike only to have the chain snap half way into the ride, naturally when I’m the furthest away from the trailhead…

    • #95334

Snapped chains tend to piss me off too! And they always seem to happen when you are facing a huge climb, miles from anywhere. 😈
