I have 86 days to lose 21 lbs.

July 2009 – at 317 lbs I felt like a slug. Didn’t want to go out and do anything. Wasn’t too happy with myself. Bought my first mountain bike.

Today – My life has completely changed. I’ve lost 79 lbs by mountain biking and trail running. No fried foods, no read meat, no alcohol, and only the occasional taco bell trip :-P

I’m signed up for the beginner class of a duathlon on 4/13. My goal of finishing the race (which I will) is going to be accompanied by me reaching my weight loss goal of -100 lbs by that date. The numbers are not against me; I can lose 2 lbs a week easily and reach my goal. I just have to do it and could use a little encouragement along the way so I’m going to be updating this thread along the weigh (grammar pun intended).

Feel free to follow me/harass me on Strava where I track all my rides and runs:
      http://app.strava.com/athletes/1443545

The race I’ve signed up for goes like this: 1.1 mile trail run -> 6 mile mtb ride -> 1.1 mile trail run. I know the trails and could easily run 2 miles OR bike 6 miles on them…however I’m not sure I can combine them together without dying so I’m working hard to get to that point.

I will post a before and after pic after my race. It’s going to be rad.

    • #115485

Congrats man! Looking forward to tracking your continued progress!

    • #115486

Congratulations and keep up the good work. I added you on strava and will post encouragement whenever I remember to log on.

    • #115487

That is AWESOME!! Keep it up, I’ll follow you on Strava, one more person watching, one more reason to not skip that run or ride 😃 I’ll be pulling for you!

You’re a mere shadow of your former self — way to go! 😃

Make sure you do some duathlon training. The first time you get off a bike and try to run that final leg, it can be a real shock. When I stop running, my body thinks it doesn’t have to run anymore–I can ride as long as I want, but when I try to run again, my whole lower body goes into revolt. There must be some sort of program to help one get over that, right :?:

    • #115491

Congratulations! You have done an amazing job, keep going! I’ll follow you on Strava too so I can see how it goes. Way to go!

    • #115492

Nice job. Best of luck on the rest of the weight loss, but I think at this point you have the technique down pretty well. Congratulations and good luck with the race.

    • #115493

Thanks everybody! I’ve been following back. I used to think I rode a lot until I saw the mileage you guys are hammering out. I may ride often but definitely not as far. 😆

Skibum, I’ve thought about that. I have no idea how my body is going to react when I jump off the bike and try to run again. I imagine it’s going to be pretty wore out as there is a lot of climbing in the trail they’re using for the mtb portion of the race. I’m going to get out and practice with some run-ride-run intervals as soon as this crap weather breaks.

    • #115494

That is awesome. A friend of mine has lost 100 #’s and counting. He feels so much better, physically and about himself. Keep up the hard work. 😃

      Friday update week 1:

      Weight: 237
It’s been raining and too wet to ride since the weekend. That didn’t stop me from running and hitting the weights/calisthenics at home. -1 lb this week argh! I haven’t even sat on the bike… Set goals in Strava for the first time. Running 6 miles this week was a reasonable goal, I ran 8 and have through Sunday to run (and hopefully ride) more. My goal for biking this week was 20 miles. I should be able to get that in this weekend.
      Image

    • #115496

      First off, great work.

Per skibum’s post, I too notice that extended periods on the bike with no running can leave me really sluggish when it comes time to run again, no matter how strong I am on the bike. But, with your situation you may find that you run like a champ because you’re just so much lighter. Your knees will be happy regardless.

    • #115497

      Thanks for the tips guys.

Well this week was less than eventful as far as cardio is concerned:
      Image

I got some good weight lifting and calisthenic sessions in this week but the snow and a swapping from a roof rack to a hitch rack kept me from going outside much. I kept my calorie intake way lower than usual and managed to still shed 2 lbs. 235 lbs this morning:
      Image

There is still the weekend to get in some cardio…and I will! I’m going to begin weighing in and making my updates on Sundays since that’s the official week’s end.

    • #115498

      MTI

Great job JT. I know what you mean about bad cardio week. Congrats on your weight loss keep it up man.

    • #115499

Yeah strong work man. It’s been ice raining here too. Completely messed up the amount of rides I could squeeze in.

    • #115500

Way to go man. We are all pulling for you. Keep us posted.

What trail is the race on?

    • #115501

      Thanks guys!

The race is going to be at my local trails in Fredericksburg, VA on the Rappahanock:
      [url:2scit9zy]http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/rappahanock-river-trail.html[/url:2scit9zy]

I know every inch of the trails so I’ll at least have that advantage!

    • #115502

Yet another wet and bitter cold week in VA. Not much cardio this week (4 short rides, zero runs) however I did get a chance to go out and ride a portion of the 6 mile race loop that I will be riding in April’s duathlon. I’m hoping it was just the weather getting to me, but it was a brutal 4.5 mile ride. It was so cold it burnt my legs to inhale through my balacava. Almost 900 feet of climbing in the first 3 miles. Argh!

Let myself have a bit of a treat last night in the form of cupcakes and light beer during the big game…I weighed in before the party:

      Image

Yep…down 5 lbs since last Friday’s weigh in. This week I will hit the -90 lbs mark.

Good work dude! Keep it up! It took me a long time to get stoked on being healthy…nothing is better than sharing that stoke. 😀

    • #115506

This weather sucks! I managed some decent rides this week. I really can’t wait for longer summer days to get in more mileage. Just have to stick to the boring trails near work that stay dry. I’ve been sick with a head cold for a few days now and have been riding anyway but not doing anything else. Also been eating too much…as the scale shows. DOH! 😆

I can deal with a little fluctuation. I started feeling better today and plan to go full beast mode in the coming weeks to start prepping for my duathlon.

      Image

Felt too crappy and weather was too crappy to get any runs in this week. Lame.

JT we had our first sunny day yesterday in WNC and I am without a bike, getting a new one on Tuesday. Today we are in the begining of a storm that is expected to dump 3 inches of rain overnight. The only day for rain next week looks like Wednesday then it is supposed to dry up quite a bit. I think the entire Eastern U.S. is in the same boat it is frusterating. Keep your chin up man we are all proud of you!

    • #115508

JT I know what you mean on the weather. We had a rosy forecast of about 50 today. Finally about 3 today it hit 44 and I quit chores and went for a short ride that was OK. Just a painful time of year and it will be over soon.

Nice job on keeping your momentum going even if the weather kinda sucks. Spring is coming. 😀 Keep up the good work.

    • #115509

Almost there! great work man. the fluctuations are normal but are soooo much more frustrating the closer you get to your goal. I battled the same when I set my goal to lose 50lbs. You’ve got the right attitude and should definitely feel proud of your progress. It is not easy but well worth it.

    • #115510

      Thanks guys! 😃

The scale thinks I’m 199 lbs this evening so I’m thinking a battery change is in order. I’ll pop some new triple a’s in tomorrow and post the weigh in. Earlier this week I was at 232…so I’m coming back down from that small gain.

This past week I acquired a spin bike for at home and it really changed the game. I’m doing 15-20 minute workouts at night and the sweat rolls hard in that short amount of time. I’m going to try to step it up to 30-40 minute workouts soon.

Weather was awful again this week. Only got in one run and less than a handful of single track rides after work. The local trails are soup. We’re supposed to have some cold weather tonight and I’m off tomorrow so I will get out in the AM for a nice (hopefully long) frozen trail ride. I also have a new DH bike dying to be broken in 😄

Just took it out for a spin. Took it to a local, very short dh trail I cleared a while ago.

Welll…she’s FAST. I ran Strava for fun and grabbed a KOM on that short section (out of 18, not too shabby lol) It has a shorter wheel base than most dh bikes so it just feels "playful" and it hauls ass. It has a DHX 5.0 rear and Domain single crown fork, it soaks up everything like butter and launches off the drops with ease. It feels like a 7" bmx bike if you can imagine that. I’ve pushed my 29er trail bike hard down that same trail and it was never as fast yet felt out of control at times. The Entourage is capable of going much faster than I can handle at the moment 😆

Weekly weigh in…back down to 231, sweet!

I need winter riding clothes, all this cold is keeping me off my bike and gaining weight again. I got my last ride of the season in on December 13 and shredded some singletrack, well at least for me I did! Put in just under 20 miles that day before a 12 hour day at work! Then here February 14 was the first time in months that the weather and trail condition was agreeing with me at the same time! I set out to my favorite trail 5 hours before work for a good long ride and ended up almost bonking after just one loop and 5.2 miles! I guess I can’t push as hard as I was after 2 solid months off the bike! I can not wait for spring and winter riding gear on the clearence racks (so I can ride next winter)!

haha I hear ya man, that happened to me last winter.

I don’t use much by means of bike specific riding clothes during the cold months. I wear under armor cold weather tights that’s I rock over my padded chamois shorts with loose shorts (or snow pants) over top. Then for upper body I just wear a couple layers with a hoodie and/or rain jacket (depending on conditions). The only other "bike specific" thing I wear and highly recommend is a Pearl Izumi balaclava for when it’s REALLY cold to cover my head, mouth, and nose. With this method I’m good until it dips below 30. Any temp in the 20s means I’m staying inside. I HATE the cold.

    • #115521

I am good in shorts to about 40 degrees. But most of the days over 40 in the past two months the trails have been so sloppy I can’t ride on them and riding on pavement is just not appealing to me in the least! Thats why I can’t really get myself to ride the stationary bike I spent so much money on ($10 off of craigslist!!) I just get bored way too fast!

    • #115522

For the stationary bike, I go to pinkbike or vital and watch riding videos while I pedal to the beat of whatever background music there is. Makes the time fly by and I work up a good sweat.

That is a good idea. I never thought about that! I always just stuck a movie in and tried to watch that to keep me from getting bored. I will try some biking videos to see how that goes for me! Thanks.

    • #115524

This was a pretty good week for me. Very stoked after just weighing in. Finally broke into the 220s! I’m trying to lose 3 lbs this coming week. 1 more lb lost and I will have reached the -90 mark…3 more lbs lost and I’ll be able to take the skydiving lessons I’ve been dying to do my whole life. A little secret: one part of what fueled this weight less vendetta of mine was my desire to skydive and/or base jump but I was too big to do it for most of my life.

      Image

All but a handful of my cycling miles this week were done on the spin bike. It was also a big week for running. I’m seeing what works for me and just how much I can take. Trying to build up a running/spinning plan, sticking to it and then riding as much single track as the weather allows in addition to the cardio plan. I’ve yet to puke or faint so I still have room to push myself 😆

      Image

    • #115525

Way to go JT! You are making fantastic progress, you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished! I think you have hit on a great way to inspire yourself to keep going with the skydiving lessons as a reward. I want to hear all about it after you jump out of that plane! You’ve much bigger cajones than I do my friend! 😃

haha! The funny thing about it is that I was horrified to even fly in a plane as a kid. I grew out of it got a taste of adrenaline and now I want to jump out of one. 😼

Uneventful week. 2 weeks ago I managed to blow the rear shock on my stumpjumper…still waiting for Fox to send the warranty replacement to my LBS. Argh. Of course the weather was pretty good most of the week and I couldn’t ride. I did attempt an xc loop on my dh bike and swear to never do that again.

Lots of calorie restricting this week. Not much exercise. Life got in the way by way of exams and papers to write. BUT I’m down 90 lbs now. 😀

Down 2 more lbs this week. 8 lbs to lose until I hit 100. 😼

Fox still has my rear shock. I haven’t been on a true xc ride in weeks now. My LBS is going to be harassing them tomorrow since this is going on 4 weeks. I got all of my cardio this week on the spin bike. Holy hell did I spin a lot. For some reason, I just didn’t feel like running this week. Going to hit the park tomorrow morning and take advantage of this new found daylight.
      Image

I also got out on the big bike twice. Yesterday I went down to Freedom Park in Williamsburg, VA: [url:1bm1j15h]http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/freedom-park-akadistrict-park.html[/url:1bm1j15h] Rode the C-Loop that contains all the freeride jumps and drops…had a blast. Yo Greaser that is a good amount lost way to go. I dropped from 186 to 177. I was never over 180 and kind of panicked. My goal is 175 by April 27 so I am there. I really cut back on soda and fatty foods but man the Jellybeans are killing me lately. Those starburst flavors are so damn good. 😆

    • #115536

Yep, that’s what I did. The only place I drank soda was at work so I just got a nice water bottle and kept it with me all day and was able to cut soda out of my diet. I usually ate pretty healthy other than that anyways. I have a good size organic garden and do a lot of canning and preserving so I know all of that is healthy as it can get! I got rid of my deep fryer a while ago, that helped also! 😆

    • #115537

Awesome guys! I like hearing other success stories. Keep it up!

I missed last night’s update and didn’t even weigh in. No stats this week either because I was too busy partying to grab a screenshot from Strava. I only have one thing to say for myself: St. Patty’s Day. I am SURE that I’ve put on some water weight over the weekend, and by water I mean beer. 😆 My weight goal for this coming Sunday’s weigh in is to be under 225. And I will!

Last week was a GREAT week for riding however! The rain finally broke long enough to dry out the local trails. I got in 3 decent runs and 3 good rides. I got to ride at Fountainhead which has been closed for months because of the weather. That was awesome.

I also got serious about my running game and went out to the local running shop and got fitted for a pair of trail running shoes that will help my duck feet not hurt when I go running. I was amazed at the process for buying a pair of running shoes…it took about an hour for them to measure my feet and observe my standing/walking/running posture to determine what I needed. Pretty cool! Of course, immediately after leaving the running store it started raining…so I have yet to put some miles on them but plan on doing so asap.

I’ll be back this Sunday with a weigh in and stats.

    • #115538

Speaking of weight loss, I just weighed in yesterday and I’ve officially dropped 10 pounds since the start of my dirty century training. 2 more pounds and I’ll be down to my weight as a Sophomore in high school! Not sure if that says something good about how hard I’ve been training, or something bad about how sedentary I was in high school!

I’ve been slowly turning up the distance on my running. I’ve vowed to start farther mtb rides and longer spin sessions this week. My duathlon is in 4 weeks and I intend on being 217 lbs at the starting line so I need to start burning some fat!

That is the last thing I want to do is get to my high school weight! I think it would take a tape worm or some sort of disease to get me back down to 135lb!!! I think I will be happy around 175 at 6’1" tall! I don’t really desire to get back to being rail thin like back in the young days when my metabolism was lightening fast!!

Mid-week update because I’m stoked right now. As you know, I’ve signed up for a duathlon next month and have been training for it. I’ve been riding, spinning, and running my ass off. After work yesterday, I completed a practice duathlon to set a baseline and see how I would perform.

It started off great with the first run. I even set a personal record for my fastest mile run.

The mtb ride was freakin hard. The 6 mile ride is hellacious. Really technical with some short steep climbs …for a fat guy riding in Northern VA anyway 😀 I was on my way to bonking and riding very sloppily near the end of the ride.

The 2nd run was even harder. My calves cramped immediately and it took some stretches to clear the pain and I was able to truck on. Finished a minute slower than the first mile. Geez!

Even with the struggles, I don’t think I did so bad and I was able to finish so I am very proud of myself.

JT you should be proud of yourself I can’t wait to see the before/after pictures. I have officially lost 10 pounds which was my goal I am back down to 175. I think I am going to shoot for 5 more pounds before the Cohutta 100 which should not be a problem but I respect your discipline especially for giving up certain foods. That has been hard for me. Damn Starbust Jellybeans are evil 😈 . Can’t stop eating them! Keep it up man!

Way to go JT! You’re going to be jumping out of that plane in no time! Keep it up, we’re all pulling for you!

I worked out harder this week than I ever have before. Ran a 5k Monday, 2 a day Tuesday (run/spin), then did a practice duathlon on Wednesday. That took a lot out of me but I still managed to get out Friday for a really good ride at one of my favorite local trails in Fountainhead Regional Park. Saturday I made the drive down to Williamsburg for some more freeride fun at Freedom Park and had to cut the ride short after only 1 loop because my calf muscles pooped out completely. I finally found my breaking point. I’ve yet to train so hard I failed and that failure hurt like hell but I knew I worked my hardest and that was a good vibe.

Jumped on the scale this evening and all the work sure enough paid off: I have 6 lbs to go! 3 weeks to go until the race…I’m right on target.

Oh boy did I find out that my body reacts the same way. When I did the practice dual on Wednesday, my calves cramped so bad on the very beginning of the 2nd run that I thought I was going to quit. I couldn’t move my feet off the ground. Did a couple toe touches and was on my way. I’ve found a training technique called "brick training" where you run/bike/run/bike in short distances, gradually adding distance to your workouts. It’s supposed to get your muscles used to the shock. I’m going to be trying this out this week.

Hey Jason no failure here. The way I look at it when I run out of gas is simply a learning experience on what to work on next. It’s only a failure if you don’t ever show improvment. Obviously you have moved mountains in what you have accomplished. Keep it up I can’t wait to see the before/after pics.

    • #115552

      Happy Easter everybody. 😀

What a rough week I had. I did another practice duathlon this past Wednesday at a less difficult trail system and my 2nd run went better this time. Less cramping…but still cramped. The next day I woke up and couldn’t put pressure on my left leg. Guess I sprained my calf 😏 I gave it 2 days to repair and attempted a real easy mtb ride yesterday and working it out actually helped with the pain some. Today it’s feeling a lot better but I’ve missed out on a lot of workouts this week. I’m avoiding a weigh in because I do not want to be hard on myself when I see a gain. I’m looking forward to being fully recovered tomorrow and hitting the trails. Lots of work to do this week with the race the following weekend…more stretching is in order!

    • #115553

I went full on beast mode this past week. Here are the numbers:
      Total weight loss: -96 lbs
Total miles for the week: 71.6

I took full advantage of the beautiful weather and crushed my 40 mile riding goal this week. I didn’t run at all this week because I wanted to make sure that calf sprain from the week prior didn’t come back and beat me up the week before the race.

The duathlon is Saturday. I have my Stumpy in the shop getting a new chain, new derailleur cables, and a full drive train cleaning. In the past 2 months I’ve had the front and rear suspension rebuilt…she’s going to feel like a new bike again and I am stoked on that.

I’m at 221 lbs right now. The diet is STRICT this week and I’m going to try to put in even more miles this week than last. Trying to lose 4 lbs by Saturday. Time to do work!

    • #115556

The bad: I didn’t reach my -100 lbs goal by the start of the race. I’ve been training exceptionally hard the week before last and this past week but my weight has been fluctuating between 220 and 223 lbs. However I’m not giving up or getting down on myself because:

The good: I competed in the Fredericksburg Off Road Duathlon yesterday morning and not only achieved my goal of finishing but I KILLED IT!! 😄

I was the only one in my age group (20-29) so I took 1st place and a medal by default, but hey…talk about an ego booster lol. I’m still waiting for the final results to post so I can see where I finished overall in the beginner class but I know I was at least middle of the pack. WAY better than I had expected.

      The race rundown:
The 1st 1 mile run started in a mass start of both beginner and advanced classes so it was wild and slightly intimidating for my first start of my first race. I found my pace and kept it. There was a decent group of people ahead of me and I stayed near the end of the pack running relatively slow so I wouldn’t blow myself out before getting on the bike.

I hit the first transition and took off on the bike for the 6 mile mtb singletrack ride. Here’s where I made up some ground. It rained Friday so the bike trails were muddy. Most of the beginners were true beginners to mtb but seasoned runners…they were iffy about the wet trail and walked a lot of obstacles, went REALLY slow down a lot of hills, and were all around very timid. I was hauling ass…I passed several people and held my position all the way to the transition. Almost took a good spill once or twice because I was really burning down the trail and slid around a few sloppy corners a little too hot 😼 I pulled into the transition, changed my shoes and took off for the 2nd 1 mile run. Held my position all the way through the run, pushing it a little harder and faster than the first run and crossed the finish line. I feel like there weren’t very many people ahead of me but there were definitely a handful or so. Way more people finished after me. If I remember the prize announcements right, the fastest beginner of the day completed the race in 51 minutes. My time was 1 hour 1 minute.

Crossing that finish line felt so good. It was such a satisfying feeling, I don’t even know how to describe it. All the hard work paid off in that instant. I’m still so happy with myself. Totally addicted to that feeling and I want to feel it again. I don’t know what my next race will be but there will be more racing.

(I’ll share the official results and some photos from the professional photographer asap)

For me, I think it’s nothing more than reverting to my childhood. From about 7 until I got my driver’s license, you couldn’t get me off of a bike. I was constantly riding and I was always bummed when it was time to go home.

Doing the same thing now, but in the woods is even better. It feels like you’re the only person left on earth and could just pedal forever.

Well, I could if I weren’t so fat and out of shape.

I’m so close I can taste it. I’m at -98 lbs now. Been doing A LOT of riding and really noticing how much further I can go without taking breaks now. I did a solo ride at Fountainhead Regional Park this afternoon. It’s one of the tougher rides in the area (cardio-wise and technically) and the I felt REALLY great the whole ride. In the back of my mind I was thinking “man I can’t wait to see the Strava results” and I ended up braking 11 PRs and beating my best time on the whole loop by a few minutes. That was with passing about 15 weekend warriors lol.

I can’t stress enough that I’ve been feeling really good. It’s like the last 10 lbs I’ve lost has made me feel like a different person, on and off the bike. Next week I shall return with a report of how I’ve beaten my -100 lb goal. 😎

If he signs up for singletracks I told him to send you a private message I hope that is OK.

    • #115583

MTI that’s totally cool with me.

I’ve actually been going through a huge change in my life. 2 weeks ago my job moved my office from northern, VA (40 minutes from my house) to SouthWest DC..a lot longer commute by car. So I’ve been taking the train to work and my riding has been limited big time. I’ve been doing a lot of calisthenics, stretching and weight lifting (trying to get my separated shoulder strengthened up) and I’ve been doing small stuff like walking through the city on my lunch break and taking stairs over the elevator. The biggest thing I’ve done is cut my calories, big time.

Doing all that, I’ve still managed to shed 5 lbs since my last update. I’m down to 211 lbs today. I hit 208 at once point right before the new job started. It’s going to be extra difficult now but I am going for a secondary goal of weighing 195 lbs.

      Image

    • #115584

Your story is fantastic man! Back in February I started reading this thread, and saw your post about Loseit. At the time I was sitting at 308lbs, and wasn’t happy with my health. Taking your advise I joined Loseit, and started exercising daily (getting in rides when I can). Using that site really shows you what you eat in a day, and holds you accountable. Since February 3rd I’m down 14lbs. I feel 100% better! I have a goal to get down to 260lbs. When I get there I’m sure I’ll make a secondary goal also. CONGRATS on your weight loss! Keep it up!

    • #115585

I feel your pain on the commute JT! I’m makes weekday riding for me nearly impossible! And 211? NICE! I’m currently stuck at 226, down 82lbs from 308, all do to a proper diet and riding, so all you trying to lose weight, it can be done!

Man, sorry to keep you guys waiting!

The job and summer semester at school has been a kick in the arse to my riding regime (as you can tell if you follow me on Strava) but I’ve been keeping my calorie counting up and I haven’t been fluctuating much at all. I just weighed in at 213 lbs. I’ve been maintaining right around 210 lbs with a +-3 lbs float.

The weather here has also been craptastic which really doesn’t help. I went out yesterday to my local trails after a few days’ worth of rain and they were too wet to be out there. I was slipping and sliding so much that I was uncomfortable.

I’m going to get back in the habit of updating every Sunday because this week is time for me to go full force into my plan of losing another 20 lbs. Now that the heat is here, I sweat out the lbs a lot faster! 😼

I’ll be back next Sunday with an update and a scale pic below 211 lbs. Time to do work!

I totally lied to you guys. Everything is on hold at the moment. The same weekend I said that, my dad rented a wood chipper. All my life I thought I wasn’t allergic to poison ivy. Turns out, I’m hyper sensitive. I’ve been on antibiotics and steroids since early last week. Both of my arms are covered in the most disgusting rashes and scabs I’ve ever seen (from the blisters popping…yeah it was that bad). Needless to say I’ve been too nervous to go out and sweat and risk spreading this rash I have going on. Blegh! I’ll report back when I’m no longer a freak of nature.

    • #115591

Oh man, I’m the same way with poison oak. If I look at it wrong, I get covered! Probably won’t help you now, but in the future, try Tecnu after you have been exposed or after riding in an area with the stuff. Works great for me.

    • #115592

Hey gar, thanks a bunch for linking the tecnu. My daughter is terribad sensitive to the stuff. I’ll give that a shot before resorting to steroids next time.

It works good for me, just follow the directions and it should help her out. I will use it as a preventative if I’m in the area of poison oak/ivy and don’t know if I have gotten into the stuff, but it also helps to keep it from spreading if you do have it.

    • #115594

2 months of maintaining 210 lbs with minimal riding. Still have the goal of hitting 190s…just need to take action.

I’ve been enjoying the hell out of my summer. Riding a lot of DH on the weekends. Not much XC at all during the week. However I just moved into a downtown apartment that is only a couple miles from the trail head of my favorite local spot. I did a ride from my front door yesterday to the trail head just to scope out the ride and it was great. There isn’t much traffic between my home and the trail but there are a LOT of college chicks sunbathing and hanging out in the parks I ride by 😎 I suspect my xc riding to pick up again real soon.

Hey JT how about an update? I saw you have a new profile photo on Strava!

Sorry guys, I’ve been super busy with life! New girlfriend, job, and car. It’s been crazy!

After a little pushing by a coworker, I’ve committed myself to racing in Ragnar DC this coming weekend! 😮 It’s a 200 mile running relay race with a 12 person team running in shifts. I’ll run a total of 14 miles over a period of ~30 hours. Sleeping in a van and on the ground between running legs. I’m pretty stoked for it to be honest. I hate running but how can it NOT turn out to be an adventure that I’ll talk about for the rest of my life!?

Weight loss wise, I’ve been sitting stagnant around 210lbs. I’ve been running a lot more and with that, I’ve grown an appetite…eating more and breaking even with my caloric intake vs burn. I’d love to hit the 190s but I think the reality of it is that I’m going to feel like I’m starving myself in order to get there…I know I need to work harder at eating smaller portions several times a day. With a hectic commute/work schedule…it’s really hard to do and I have nothing but excuses for why I’m not doing it.

All in all, I’m still super happy with what I’ve accomplished and I still feel myself becoming a better, stronger rider every time I jump on the bike. My poor Stumpy is in shambles right now. She’s taken a beating this season…right now she’s rocking mismatched wheels and a 9 speed cassette instead of the 10 speed that should be there. She needs work…and a bath.

    • #115598

If you ever get the opportunity to participate in a Ragnar Relay Race, DO IT. It was the craziest, most fun thing I’ve ever done. I’m still sore and still hyped with a feeling of accomplishment.

Even though each run was way more brutal than I had anticipated (lots of hills) I managed to maintain a 10 minute mile pace throughout each run. My typical pace for a flat mile is in the 9s…so I was happy with that. I may have lost a lot of weight but I’m still slow 😎

The hardware for completing the race is a heavy duty, very sweet bottle opener (I guess runners have one thing in common with mtbers, and that’s a love of beer!)
      Image

Now to heal up and get back on the mtb.

Great advice here. There is major truth to the cliché “just do it”.

      Update!

Current weight: 203 lbs. I’ve been calorie counting and running and I’m so close to my ultimate goal of weighing in less than 200 lbs that I can taste it. I hate to admit it, but even with full cold weather gear head to toe, I can’t handle this cold weather anymore since losing the weight. I’m going to cut back my riding this winter and slowly rebuild my Stumpy. My drivetrain is a nightmare and it creaks like wood floors in a 100 year old house. In the past year I’ve ran that poor thing into the ground.

      My rebuild list:
      -Rear derailleur cable
      -Brake bleed
      -Cassette/chain rings/chain
-Rear wheel needs to be sent to Sun Ringle for a RMA replacement
      -headset cleaning or rebuild
      -pedals

I’m going to be doing more running than riding this winter as I’m training for a half-marathon with the goal of competing in a few sprint triathlons next spring/summer.

I’m going to try to be more active on the forum too. Life has been hectic!

I’ve noticed that about the cold also, crazy huh?! I’m at 204, who’s going to hit -200 first? 😎

I like a little competition, let’s do it!

On that note: I JUST finished woofing down a massive Chipotle burrito, chips, salsa and a few beers…so you’re likely in the lead now. 😆

      Good job guys!

I started using the My Fitness Pal app about a month and half ago, and I’ve dropped about 15lbs so far, I’d like to drop another 5, maybe 10lbs. I can feel a big difference on the bike, so I can’t imagine how much better you guys feel!

It’s very rewarding to feel yourself going faster or riding longer than usual and knowing that it is purely because of the hard work you’ve been doing.

Your on! Have another burrito on me! I’m pretty stoked, no gain over Thanksgiving, even with the tasty pecan pie I enjoyed!

I didn’t hold back much at all eating wise over the holiday. I’m up 2 lbs 😳 lol

I got on my bike for the first time in ages and went for a short spin yesterday! Felt great to get back out there.

Hi…had to sign up to post (first time to the site), and I wanted to encourage you, like the others. I was 241lb at Christmas, and hit the 235 mark this morning. I set my old bike up in the basement with a trip computer on the rear wheel, set on distance, just last night. It was -2 degrees in York, PA last night, so I am thankful for a place to pedal. Even though I have only had one night at it, having Pandora playing on their Chill Out Radio (no pun intended) station really helped me keep a cadence. It was just loud enough to drown out the monotonous whirring of the trainer…very nice. I also repaired my wife’s treadmill, and she walked last night. We were discussing switching off, because of the different muscles used in riding and hiking, just like you were discussing. We’ll definitely do that now. So, thanks! I have a long history of motocross, enduro, and trials riding, but sold all of my motorcycles over the years. I recently replaced my mountain bike, my second one, and I want to be ready to ride!!!!

Awesome! Keep up the good work! I’m currently stuck at 202, how are you making out JT?

      210 when I weighed in Sunday…with a good 5 lbs of excuses 😳

Life keep getting crazier and I keep losing free time plus I’ve been in a winter time slump. The cold weather not only cripples me now that I’ve lost weight…I’ve learned that it also depresses me. I forced myself out of bed early to go run yesterday and felt great all day to follow (really missed that feeling)…I’m getting back into the swing of things!

      Update:
Still working on getting below 200. I’ve seen 199 on the scale once or twice, but I just can’t keep up the regular work out routine to stay there.

Went on my first single track ride since December yesterday. It was a slippery, sloppy, mess. Felt like I was riding with a flat rear, sliding around every corner and walking up most hills to prevent trail damage from spinning out. Fun as always though.

I’m with you! I hit 198 once (should have taken a picture to prove it 😃 ), then back up to 202. I’m having a hell of time getting below that number!

Glad someone else feels my pain! I think that warmer weather and more daylight will be the barrier breaker for me.

How about an update!? I’ve been MIA from this site for a while…life has been in overdrive but I haven’t stopped riding!

In the time I’ve been missing, I haven’t made anymore weight loss progress but I have been maintaining low 200s. I’m content at that weight but not really happy…I’m about to start training for the Ragnar running relay in September so I suspect my weight to dive down by the fall.

I completed my first 12 hour race last month. I did 4 laps (10 miles each) my teammate also did 4 laps. We drank a lot of beer too..ended up getting last place but man did we have fun lol

Still riding my stumpy. It’s been getting refreshed here and there. I murdered the bottom bracket during that race running through some real deep mud holes…so that’s been replaced. Also did a number on the brakes, so I upgraded to some SLX stoppers…best upgrade I’ve made yet!

I’m going to try to stay more active on here. I miss you guys! :-P

Hey JT, long time! Good to hear from you. I finally broke the 200 mark, got to 198. I’ve been maintaining around 200-202, which is perfect, so I’m happy.

I also live in Fredericksburg (Spotsy actually) but just ran across this post. I added you on Strava, get at me if you want to ride sometime!!
