Is Awesome…I highly recommend trying it. I did my first night ride the other day and its a great way to ride during the fall and winter months. I usually have a tough time getting off work early enough to ride during the daylight hours so buying the light was worth the money. Just make sure you buy a real lighting system (at least 120+lumens), and you got someone to ride with . And you can also do what we do…enjoy adult beverages afterwards 😃

I’ve been wondering about what the hell I plan to do once November 1st. rolls around and I have an hour of light after work.I also hate currently getting caught in the woods with low light,it gets dark quick!

You’ve inspired me to at least look for a light!

Full moon riding is real fun, no need for lights.

      Ha, you said "full moon".

Actually, I’m becoming interested in this. I’m at a place in my life where I don’t want to stop riding for the dark, or the cold, or the economy, or the boogie man, or anything else. I figure night riding is the next thing to take on. And, as luck would have it, there is an organized night ride at a local state park on Friday nights. So, what am I waiting for? Lights! I need lights. Did everyone sign up for the Exposure Lights giveaway on mtbr.com (sorry admins, not trying to steer away traffice).

      http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=561579

Good luck. Wait, nevermind, don’t go there. The more people that sign up the worse the odds. Yep, nothing to see there. Disregard.

      😃

Oh, and I like this too! Like it a lot, actually. But not in the state park. I think that is illegal.

Hi Folks check out this vid I posted on night riding using a Light & Motion Seca 900 Ultra

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXUWIHaGqjs

I will have the full review posted sometime soon

John Moorehouse (24 hour solo racer out of Orlando) is/was sponsored by Light and Motion and he is who introduced them to me…they seem to have some amazingly bright lights and I always though about picking something up from them.

Unfortunately now, something like that is not in my budget so I’ll have to rock something cheaper.

State parks here close at dark so if you’re night riding there you’re already in trouble, haha.

Oleta Park here has sanctioned night rides a couple of days a month. Reading this damn thread is making me want to go spend money i dont have on a damn light 😠

Wow! I dont think i want to ride in the dark that bad just yet. LOL maybe 150 -200 would be enough for now. 😃

The Seca 900 is an all out kick butt light ment for going really fast in the dark if your looking to just enjoy and not go to terribly quick while riding in th dark consider perhaps an alternative lighting system like the Princeton Tec 3 or the Light & Motion Stella 200 or the Dual… All of those lights toss a good amount of light for the trails…

Which ones?? the 900s or the Stella 200 and the Dual?

When Trek7 and I were at Interbike this year the Light and Motion series lights were pretty awesome though…Good quality lights… Great simple mounts and light weight systems that is hard to beat…The most important feature though is the fact that all their systems share the same connectors so in the future you can always upgrade batteries or actual lights.

Some time this week I am hoping to get the Seca 900 full review out for you folks to read.. YES they are expensive but worth the money specially if your into riding in the dark alot…I have been using many different systems in the past and these really rock.

Thanks for the heads up. I dont know but the review would have to be excellent for me to ever consider paying that much for lights. lol Who knows? Maybe someday ill be more into night. Till then i think 200 would probably be my top $$$

Sorry guys didnt mean to stir the pot but night riding is the bomdigity and yes you cant drink at state parks but check your local riding clubs for certain group night rides. In memphis where I’m from we have Friday Night Beer Rides
      😎

and its been my experience to find a lighting system that mounts to your helmet, its way better than a handle bar mount but in a perfect world both would be ideal. I spent $200 and there is cheaper out there

    • #84303

Thought i would share having recently bought the Joystick Maxx 2

brilliant lights with a fair few accessories although its only limitation is only having one smart plug connection when you could do with four.

I contacted the office in England already, no reply so far.

other than that such a good light, versatile can be used for so many things including fixing punctures in the dark

as far as lights go for the prices its fantastic especially as i dont want to spend £400 on the dual Hope ones.

Yeah, I just had my maiden voyage tonight. It was awesome! I didn’t really have a decent light so I was going slower than normal. Just a tad cold too, somewhere in the 30’s.

My friend and I started at about 4pm. Then a couple other guys joined in and we hit up another trail (Saxon Hill), We stopped at a raised platform, which use to be like a truck stop, and it’s in an open field so you could see the whole sky and city from that view.

    • #84306

NIght riding is a pure adrenilin rush, It is a Hoot. I have a Cyglo light Bar mount and a Sigma Helmet light. Got both of them for about 115 a piece and they work great in combination. Certainly the best way to go is both lights. Gives you the best of both worlds, Light where you are turning and shadows off the bar mount to pick up the obstacles.

    • #84307

I’m going tonight for a loop around 5pm should be awesome, cant wait to hit the trail then too enjoy some ice cold beers

I’ve still not gone night riding but my buddy has mentioned picking up a couple of Stella 120’s and giving me one for my birthday so I should be able to experience the joy of night riding soon! The Rock trail close by is on private land so I’ll be able to ride until the batteries die, haha.

That’s a good deal dude, all our open spaces close an hour after the sun goes down here in the front range.

    • #84310

It says the battery life on high output on the 120’s is 2.5 hours so I should be wore out long before that, the trail only takes about 45 minutes so I most likely won’t ride much longer than an hour after dark too. After camping at the trails (Santos) a couple weekends ago and getting up at dawn one day,I’d love to go for a sunrise ride.It was just slightly foggy out and very cool moving through the woods at that time of morning.

Chili,I was wondering if you were stickin to the daylight,I can’t wait to go try it out! You have a helmet and handlebar mount lights or what are you using?

HaHa Steve. Didn’t know the Front Range shut down at night. Cept for the lions and tigers and bears. 😆 Funny, behind my house in the National Forest the only safe time to ride in Bambi season is at night (or Sunday). I usually stick to some city owned parkland for night riding so I’m never too far out there. Girlfriend still thinks I’m nuts.

Just put in my order for a Stella 200 today. That with the NiteRider Storm I already have should have me lit up like the White House Christmas tree. Could buy another bike for what I will have in lights, but I don’t feel safe without them. Maybe one day I will have a job where i can ride during the day.

    • #84312

Those lights can get incredibly expensive and my first thought was "$200 for an aluminum housing and and LED?".But then the batteries come to mind and that is what I believe the cost comes from. The R&D on the equipment as well as machining/manufacture can add to the cost but those nice NiMH and Li-ION batteries and the charger have to be a good chunk of the total cost.

I had planned to machine some aluminum mounts for some Harbor Freight LED flashlights and mount one on each side of the handlebars and possibly tape one to the helmet but that would require 9 AAA batteries at once and would get mighty expensive. That’s where I started thinking about the batteries and the charger and the cost involved.

$579 for the nicest light Light and Motion makes is ridiculous for my needs and budget but the Stella 120 at $129 could possibly pay for itself in saved cash on alkaline batteries and the extra hours I’m able to stay at work without itching to go ride.I plan to call the local Light and Motion dealer in town tomorrow and have them make sure they have a charged up unit that we can look at when it gets dark.I’m interested to see how much brighter they are compared to the little flashlights I think are so bright.

    • #84313

Hey Galaxy, I have the Stella 120 and compared to the LED headlamp that I use for camping, it’s WAY brighter. I actually just noticed this last night when I was trying to install new windshield wipers on my wife’s car in the dark.

To give you an idea about light and power output, the Stella 120 has a heat sink that can burn you after running the light for just a few minutes.

Not sure if you saw this but we did a product review of the Stella 120 on the blog last fall:

Night riding is a absolute rush. I have been using the Nite Rider MiNewt x2 on the bars 300 lumens and around $200 and I have the MiNewt mini for the helmet at 110 lumens at around $100 The combination rocks and gives me plenty of light to rip up the trail and to avoid raccoons and the like on the trail. The combo of both bar and helmet really make the difference and I do recommend both. These may not be top of the line on the market but for the price I have no complaints and I really don’t think the weight is that bad. May be the only draw back is the length of charge at high is around 2 hours but that is a non issue as my ride is under this. Another rider I sometimes ride with has a great system but the price paid was more then double what I paid.

Call me cheap, but sorry, no can do. $300 plus for just a light is highway robbery.

I’ve seen those lights, and you definitely get what you pay for. Meaning you blind everybody that looks even remotely [i:2uwxoxp2]close[/i:2uwxoxp2] to the light. I don’t know how powerful they can get, but I swear it’s like 2000 lumen. Anyways, I myself will also stick to my petty little Petzel headlamp and continue on night riding, just got back from my third venture, and it’s not losing it’s thrill anytime soon.

I just got a Cygolite Trion 600 Wireless, its around $315-$360 depending on what store your shopping and I love it. Its handle bar only mount b/c its on the heavy side (houses the battery)but WOW it lights up the trail

    • #84318

Just did my first night ride the other night. I’m hooked! I used a Cygolite Milion 150 on the handlebars and a Milion 200 on the helmet and had no problems.

    • #84319

too many snakes, too hard to see at night even with a light, will stick to day riding….

    • #84320

I have an older CATEYE light that mounts on the bars. Its always worked pretty good! Its been a while since my last night ride but there always fun. If I get back into it I will probably throw a beam on my helmet for more visibility. You know got to look over the shoulder for the boogie man….LOL. Have fun on the night rides! 😼

Saw those Stella 120’s in action on an out of the box charge and DAMN!!!!! It lit of the side of the building up next to Gator Cycle here and its bright in front of that store,I can only imagine the brightness on a pitch black trail.Beam pattern seemed awesome and the LED flashlight we brought for comparison yo couldn’t even see compared to the Stella 120.
