Getting back into the trail stuff after years of being a roadie (still am). Wifie & I picked up a pair of Specialized HardRocks (hers is the womans version) to test the waters in. We ride alot at Pocohontus State Park. Tried Buttermilk and Northbank trails last weekend, FANTASTIC! We had several "pucker monments" on Buttermilk. We are truly fortunate to have such great trails in town…and after riding such great pubs!
      Thank for this great site!

Welcome Bemohan and Wife. Greetings from the Roanoke area. I’ve heard those trails at Buttermilk and some on the island in the James River in Richmond are pretty good. I ride at Carvins Cove, Mill Mountain, Douthat and in the National Forest. I’ll bet the roadie background gives you good endurance even if you are new to mountain biking. That took a long time for me to develop being a nonrider for the last 25 years or so (aside from a little rails to trails riding). Nice to have those post ride pub visits too – have some of those here too. Theres several other VA posters here too. Again, welcome aboard.

      Welcome!

Hardrocks hold a special place in my heart. My first real bike was a Hardrock Sport Disk. I still have the frame. Durn thing is solid as a frikkin rock.

Great to have you on board…. and good to see your wife is on the bike too…. Don’t be a stranger, we rarely bite…..
      Well….
Except for the few here who are feral & ride singlespeeds. We just keep them pacified with industrial doses of Fat Tire. 😃

Welcome bmohan and wife. I have a friend in Richmond and have been trying to get up there to ride with him.

This is a great site and everyone is friendly here. Hope you enjoy the experience almost as much as riding.

Hello and welcome from Southwest Virginia. You folks from the Roanoke area ever try the Pandapas Pond trails? Carvin’s Cove is currently my favorite trail system but pandapas is much closer, about 1 hour away as opposed to 2 hours away.

LALD. Pandapas Pond is on my list of places to go, just haven’t got there yet. I used to hike there when I was at VA Tech in pre MTB times. Then there were just 2 trails up to the fire trail on the eastern ridge and nothing on the west side of the lake except for the creek trail. I hear there is quite a system there now. Will do sometime.

thanks for the welcomes! CCRider, I would have thought I’d experiance less lung burning from decades on the road bike but it didn’t happen that way. The short, intense outputs of engery needed to navigate the trails and tricks left me feeling like the middle-aged man I am! I’ve also noticed my upperbody is much more fatigued than when on the road…but that’s a good thing, right? Anyways, look like another decent weekend coming up so it’s see ya on the trail.
BTW, I’ll change my avatar as soon I get pictures of the bikes on to the work computer.

bmohan. I have talked to several mountain bikers who claim the roadie riding did help their endurance, but they already were avid MTBers. It may only work that way once you have built up your mountain biking muscles, but you figure it can’t hurt. Side note – like that boating too. I float the James regularly in season.

Welcome Bmohan from a fellow roadie / mtn biker. I started out on the road but I find myself spending more and more time on singletracks. You don’t have to keep looking over you shoulder for a jacka** on a cell phone 😼 or getting chased by dogs 😮 . Just keep an eye out for trees (they tend to jump out at ya every now and then) 😳
