July 8, 2013 at 11:55 #120735POWHATAN, Va. (AP) – Virginia has opened its 36th state park, a 1,564-acre property along the James River.
Gov. Bob McDonnell was the keynote speaker Saturday as the Powhatan State Park was christened. It was originally part of the Beaumont Correctional Center.
The state Department of Juvenile Justice transferred the property to the state Department of Conservation and Recreation 10 years ago.
In a statement, McDonnell said the park will become an economic and cultural attraction for Powhatan County.
The governor also announced funding of $50,000 to serve as seed money in developing an International Mountain Biking Association ride center at the park.
The park will eventually include camping, cabins and other improvements.

Cool! That sounds very promising. I’m really liking the current state of mountain biking in VA. Seems to be growing with great momentum.

Yeah, you guys really do have it good! Even if you’re stuck living in Eastern VA, there are lots of trails there, and you have relatively easy access to world-class mountain riding a little ways to the west, without even leaving the state!
