Welcome, can’t help much on the trails as I am not near you. But renting a bike till you find the right one is a great idea!

renting is good depending on how much you plan to ride VS the price of a bike. You can get a new bike for about $300.00 and up. If you rent a bike and spend hundreds of dollars, you should have just bought a bike. I do think it is a good call, you want to know you will like it before committing.

      These are must haves…

1: Helmet, this can be from a bike shop or Walmart they are all going to work the same. More Expensive ones are lighter and designed to keep you cool, but all of them will protect your head.

2: Small pump to carry with you on the trail to pump your tires after fixing a flat.

3: One Spare tube, Schrader or Presta depending on what your wheels are designed for.

4: Self Sticking Patch Kit to fix tubes.

5: Tire Levers to remove a flat tire (unless on Multi Tool)

6: Multi Tool with a assortment of hex keys, Tire lever, and Chain Breaker.

7: Chain Breaker if your multi tool does not have one.

8: Some kind of water hold device. This can be a bottle and cage on the bike or a backpack device like a Camelback or FloPak (whick can also hold all of your other stuff)

9:Some kind of under seat bag that holds all of your tools.

10:Cell Phone, you never know you might need it.

      11: Padded Cycling Shorts

      12: A Moisture Wicking Shirt

      13: Biking Gloves

You may want to think about taking a class on bike maintenance to learn how to do trail fixes and minor repairs. Youtube.com is a never ending resource of videos on how to fix and maintain bikes.

You can also take a bike skills class, so you can learn to ride, have fun, and be safe.

Welcome to the site AngelGear. VTolds has a pretty inclusive list of must haves. When you get ready to purchase a bike, let us know. Lots of knowledgeable folks on this site that will be glad to give advice and recommendations on bikes, etc. I think maybe you are in the north Georgia hills, so work your way into climbing with smaller hills first. It can be overwhelming if you try to tackle too much steep too fast. If you have a local bike club, check and see if they have some beginner female rides. You could get ideas on bikes and meet some other new riders. Again, welcome to the forum. 😃

Besides what has been mentioned, get a mt bike book at your library. It is amazing reading basic to advance skills can help you. I have been riding since ’92 and still try to read one or two each year.
