Hello all! I’m a new MTBer and have been THOROUGHLY enjoying myself. A buddy of mine and I have just started…maybe a month and a half or so ago (about 8 rides under our belts). We are learning as we go as well as checking out websites/videos to improve our skills. Just got a new Jamis and am looking forward to riding that…all my rides before were on a no suspension, few inches too small, old, old, bike…and those were still fun. Looking forward to learning and getting out there and riding some more.

Welcome to the board, Outlaw. 😎

Glad you could join us, and don’t be a stranger! Check out our trail listings for rides in your area; and then come back with some pics. 😀

you’ll love the sport and the people if you stick with it New Bern. Have you purchased clip in pedals yet?

I’ve been riding about a year and a half. Didn’t clip in until January 07. It is the single best thing you can learn to do when you are new to the sport. You’ll crash a lot in the beginning, but you’ll get it. Purchase multi-release cleats and shimano entry level pedals (540’s I think).

Love the New Bern area along the water front. Stayed at the Sheraton twice for soccer tournaments.

Greetings from VA. Welcome to the obsession – I mean sport. Nothing will get you going like a new bike. Good advice from ReserveRockhopper on cleets. It definitely takes some getting used to, but nothing will help your performance early on much more than that. I resisted and didn’t switch from flat pedals until this year. Wish I had switched sooner. You really see the difference on climbs, or in your area maybe powering out of a mudhole.

Any of you Tarheels wander up my way, PM me and we can hook up for a ride.

Where in Va? Anglers Ridge in Danville is one of our favorite trails anywhere!

Thanks for all the responses and some of the quick advice. My buddy has some clip-ins and he let me try them out just to ride around in. They definitely would taking some getting used to. This seems like a great site with a bunch of great people so I’m looking forward to riding more and learning new things. I’ll have to tell him about it so he can hop on here and join in the posting. Adios.

ReserveRockHopper. Live 40 min. north of Roanoke, but work in Roanoke. Ride Carvins Cove, Douthat (1 hour north of Roanoke), and stuff on the National Forest in between. During the week, I usually ride in Roanoke on a pretty cool urban trail system that is still being developed.

I may come down you way if it gets icy here (just a matter of time). I here lots of good things about Anglers Ridge. I understand that there is also a pretty good urban trail system around Greensboro & Winston Salem.
