Officials with Oglethorpe Power Corp. and the GA DNR are opening 10 miles of hiking trails in Rocky Mountain Rec. Area to mountain bikes with the potential to open even more trails in the future. The 5,000 acre recreation area is in north Georgia’s Floyd county. There’s a very long and detailed article about the plans from the Chattanoogan but here’s the meat:

Oglethorpe Power and Georgia DNR are excited to open the first ten miles of trails to mountain biking. There is potential at the site for much more trail development, but we want to be very cautious not to create any unforeseen problems. The site can host a variety of mountain-bike and hiking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to expert," said Bill Tharp, plant manager at OPC’s Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant. According to Tharp, "color-coded signs are up designating trails as easy (green), intermediate (blue) or hard (black). We will eventually post mountain-bike trail maps at all of our informational kiosks within the recreational area."

Anyone hiked or even biked here yet? I’m definitely adding it to my must-ride list…

Sounds intriguing! So are the trails already open to MTB’s?

From the article it sounds like it – though it’s a bit unclear.

This article, plus folks on the SORBA forum, both state the trails are open.

I live about 25 minutes from this place. To be honest it is okay at best. The first trail I rode was not worth the 5 minutes I spent on it. The second trail was pretty good but it was brand new and did not flow very well. That was the main problem with the trails. They did not seem to flow. There are other trails that I did not ride but I saw people heading towards so I’m sure somebody enjoys them. It is okay to ride if you are in the area but I wouldn’t suggest traveling to ride it for a while.
