New Carbon Fatbike from Salsa (Frostbike 2013)

So much for fatbikes being heavy!

The first thing I noticed was the SRAM XX1 group, including a fat bike specific crank, a sure sign fat bikes are not just a flash in the pan. Thru-axles front and rear and a press fit bottom bracket add to the overall stiffness. Reimer was tight-lipped about the dimensions, perhaps there is a new specification in the works here? The fork is full carbon with a tapered steerer, with room for 100mm rims and any tire currently on the market, including the 4.8 Surly Bud and Lou tires. The rear end it limited to 4.0 tires on 82mm rims.

Two models will be out in time for next winter, an XX1 build for $5,500 and an X9 build or $3,500. The XX1 model, with a smattering of high end Truvativ cockpit parts, 45NRTH tires, 82mm rims and tubes is claimed to weigh 24.2 pounds.

Also, word is someone (no word who) is going to be coming out with a fatbike suspension fork soon.

Wow! I have had my eye on some fat bikes, though it will not be my next purchase. But this is just awesome! and with the possibility of a suspension fork too! This is just too cool.

I wonder how much you need the suspension fork with those huge tires? I’ve never ridden one, especially in those conditions, so no clue how that would work out. Fox would probably just rebrand some dirt bike forks for it!

I doubt the suspension fork is really needed, but it would allow you to go bigger I would think. I know what you are saying about the tires thought. I just upgraded from some slim 2.1’s to some chunky 2.25’s and it feels like I added at least 10mm to the forks travel on my bike!

I can say it: Fatback Bikes had a prototype suspension fork at Outerbike last fall. Greg, the owner of Fatback, explained all the issues surrounding bringing it to market and it’s pretty involved. (Not just the fork itself, but also redesigning the frame geometry to accomodate it)

I’m currently demo’ing an alloy Fatback with the rigid carbon fork. After some ledge drops and even catching air on it, I think the suspension fork is unnecessary … but that won’t stop people from wanting it, and if they want it, not selling it would be leaving dollars on the table I guess.
