It’s always awesome to see more mountain bike trails in coastal areas of the southeast, especially since so few exist. IMBA is supporting local volunteers and students from Coastal Carolina University to build trails at Cox Ferry Lake Rec. Area before summer. Full article:

One of the volunteers says he’s stoked for the new trail because right now he has to drive more than 70 miles to Wilmington, NC just to ride. New (local) trails rock!

Very Nice! I’m always stoked to see more singletrack getting laid down!

That’s great news. Maybe they can build some near Hilton Head next. We are meeting family there later this year and I thought it would be great to hit up some trails while there. Only problem: there really aren’t any. From what I understand though, the area is very (road) bicycle friendly, so maybe I’ll just rent a cruiser and take what I can get.

There’s actually one doubletrack ride you can do on Hilton Head, though you probably already saw this one:

Obviously it’s a big challenge to build interesting, sustainable trails in coastal areas like the area around Hilton Head. It’s pretty much just sandy and flat for miles and miles…

Well, the singletrack gnomes, of course. 😃

Actually, that was all pipe dream/perfect world kinda stuff. Like trek7k points out, I understand the challenges of building sustainable trails on, well, a beach…

trek7k – Yes, I had seen that trail, but thanks. I decided against taking the bike for just that trail. Actually, the thought of sand and salt getting in all the nooks and crannies of my bike closed the case for me. If I stumble across a place that rents a trail bike, maybe I’ll go check it out. Did you ever check out the website I posted for the Arkansas trails? Any help?

Yeah, wouldn’t it be awesome if there was an epic singletrack network in every single town?

I think we should make that happen. That’ll be our goal: in 20 years time, every community over 1,000 will have at least 10 miles of singletrack.

      Let’s get building….

My riding buddy/neighbor have a mission to build a stealth network of trails and features in our suburban neighborhood linking yards and wooded community property. The key is to do it so that no one actually sees it, unless they are riding it. Oh, and I guess they can’t see us working on it either (covenants, oy!). Not sure we could get 10 miles done — not sure we could get 1 mile done — but it’s fun to think about and discuss over beers.
