      Hi everyone,

I need your advice in regards to my current bike.

So this is the bike I purchased in Fall 2010: http://www.specialized.com/ca/en/bc/SBC … spid=45801

In terms of usage, I’m currently using it for getting in shape (e.g. 20KM, 30KM, 40KM runs). Using it on and off road (basically making up my own trails as I go). Eventually once I consider myself in good shape I’d like to use it more off road going down mountain bike trails, etc.

The bikes been good to me, however I think the drive train is horrible…I’m never felt comfortable changing gears because I’m afraid the chain will fall off (it’s happened before) and sometimes when I try to change gears it just makes a loud noise (as if its having trouble changing gears but didn’t fall off) – so I usually stick to one or two gears.

Basically, my question is: is it worth upgrading this bike? e.g. new fork and new drive train (if possible?). I’ve thought about getting a new bike, however I don’t really have anyone to sell this current one to (paid $1K for it). It’s a 29er and it’s a 21" frame (I’m 6’5 205 lbs so its a perfect size for me) and I don’t really know anyone else of my size that would really fit on the bike.

In terms of cost, price isn’t really that much of an issue. I mean, I could get $10K bike if I wanted to, however I don’t want to feel like I’m spending money just for the sake of spending it. I’d like to get the most value for whatever I get.

Any recommendations on what I should do?

      Thanks.

Its not a bad bike at all. It just has lower level components on it. Sometimes lower level components won’t shift as cleanly as the more expensive stuff but you should be able to get it adjusted to a point where it is at least tolerable. The frame itself is a standard aluminum frame that you would have no problem upgrading if you decided to do so in the future. Take it to a mechanic and have them take a look at the drive train to see if it needs adjustment or if you have a part that will actually need to be replaced from damage. If you are feeling brave, there are several "how to" guides on this site an many others that will help you check the shifting on your own.
