As you probably  saw I need a new bike. So i ride a 2013 Treck marlin 29er, and I’ve slowly been getting better and have gone from cross country to all mountain/enduro . I have gotten to the point were I need a new bike my derailleur has had to been fixed twice now and I need something more aggressive. The problem is I am a 16 year old boy with only a couple buck and my parents don’t want to spend 1,000$ on a bike. So I need help to figure out how or what bike under 1000$. Please Help!!!

That is really a pretty nice bike,, maybe spend a little on upgrading it to 11×1 and putting a 100mm rock shox fork on it.  Shimano XT SL m8000 rear shifter can be had for about $60, a Shimano XT RD-m8000 rear derailleur about $90, and a Shimano xt 8000 11 speed cassette for about $100, and a rockshox 30 gold is about $300,    That is $550 total or if you are happy with the Suntour fork, just do the gears for $250.

I wish I could get a job but i cant, but I’m at a prep school and I i have no free time for a job. @Alvin Mullen I would still be worried about the derailleur braking.

I wouldn’t count on finding a “more aggressive” derailleur. 🙂 All derailleurs, even the Saint stuff, are pretty delicate. I would focus on what caused the derailleur to break twice.

Was it a stick? I’ve done that more than one–and it was usually because I wasn’t staying in the middle of the trail and I picked up a stray (too fast/not in control, too tired, etc.)

Did you bash it on a rock? Again, some thing–not staying in control.

The interesting thing with derailleurs (but other bike components as well) is they actually become more fragile the more you spend.  You can bash the crap out of a X7 rear derailleur way more than you could with an XX1 without ill effect. Personally I say focus on what you can do as a rider to prevent your bike from being damaged.

Haha, no I wasn’t talking about a more aggressive derailleur, I  was talking about a whole new more aggressive bike. Like full suspension. I Broke it the first time just going down the trail and it went into the spokes, the second time I went off a drop off and it just broke.

just going down the trail and it went into the spokes

Sounds like it wasn’t tuned correctly. Plenty of online tutorials out there so that’s an easy fix.

Not sure about the derailleur breaking after a drop–never heard of that happening.

TBH you won’t be satisfied with a FS bike that costs under $1000 unless you find a great deal on a used one. A hardtail is probably a good bike for now because it’s going to be a lot more durable than a FS rig (fewer things can go wrong.)

If you want full suspension,, the best bang for the buck in a brand name IMHO is the Giant Stance 2,, lists for $1500, I got a 2015 left over for $1300,, other than that some people have been very happy with bikes from bikesdirect.com   This one looks pretty good.. http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/fsx-29pro-fullsuspension-29er.htm

Skip to the 1:40 mark to see how aggressive this guy is riding his hardtail. AFAIK, no derailleurs were harmed in the filming of this video. 🙂

Ok you’ve persuaded me, what kind of bike would you recommend?

I’ve always loved hardtails. Commencal has some pretty nice hardtails for pretty cheap. Commencal builds this baby torwords more aggressive riding.

What Jeff said. You can have the nicest, most expensive, “aggressive” bike out there and if your components aren’t tuned correctly or you’re bashing it into things it won’t matter.

Accidents do happen though as I proved this weekend. A fist-sized rock got thrown into a brand new Shimano 11-speed XT rear derailleur and the thing just exploded. In all my years of riding, that’s the first time I’ve ruined a derailleur without straight up crashing on one.
