Well After much freting and training and almost backing out I completed my First 24 hour Mountain bike race. We were supposed to have a 3 man crew and one guy didn’t show up so we rode with a two man crew.

Wow, What an experience. About as much fun as you can have with your cloths on, and at the same time one of the most physically and mentally demanding things an old man like me can tolorate.

If you ever get the opportunity to experince this. DO IT!!!! If for no other reason, to say that you did!

      Happy Trails!

That’s awesome. Congratulations! What race was it? How did you finish? If you don’t mind my asking, how old of a feller are ya?

    • #84545

We finished 7th. out of 14 in the Two man OPEN division, I am 44 and my partenr 43. It was the 24 hours of Rocky hill in Smithville, TX. put on by Terafirma promo’s. They did a great job.

Yea I know…44 not that old, but most of those young 20 somethings that were in the two man were in a little better shape. Although they whine alot 😆 😆 😆

    • #84546

hey you wouldn’t have heard me whining. Me getting to ride my bike for hours on end…sounds good to me. heck if was there and knew about your situation I would have volunteered to be the third man gladly.

that’s cool. to be honest i have never done a 24 hour race. the longest i have ever done was a 7 hour solo. It was a about a year ago now. I came in 10th of 30. but the guys 20th thru 30th were all the ones that didn’t quite make it (passing out, heat stroke, sever muscle cramping, etc.). I have to say the last hour of it was a total beast. I seriously thought I was not going to make and be messed up in ways i didn’t want to imagine. 😢 anyhow congrats on your race. what kind of terrain or tread was it mostly on?

Right on man. I’m only a few years younger, and I’ve never done anything like that, so consider yourself an inspiration.

In a 24-hour race, is it based on the number of laps your team can make in the alotted time? If so, how many laps did you guys make? What was you average lap time? Was the course tough, or is it mostly the duration that gets to you?

Sorry for all of the questions. Just curious.

      Hey Spaz!

Thanks, we would have been glad to have you

The TErain was Hilly and Rocky, Had some pretty deep stream crossings, Two "Walls" Just a bunch of single track. It was a 10 mile loop. Get this, The winner in the mens solo road 18 laps on a Single speed. (thats 180 miles) He also had the fastest lap at 48 min. That guy was SUPER FIT!!!!

    • #84549

good god. more like SUPER MAN. the most i road was a little less than 70 miles, but dont remember the time it took for one lap. it was a loop that was a little less than 10 miles round. I made it a personal goal to to ride at least ten times and then call it quits if that didnt do it.

man 180 miles on a single-speed…that’s just crazy

It is basically the number of laps you complete and then the time you complete your last lap. We did 13 laps, The fastest was 71 min the slowest was nearly 2 hours (I helped a poor young lady who lost all of her lights at 3:00 AM iinto the finish line). We actually stopped at 9:00 AM (21 hours) we were just whipped and it was getting dangerous for us to continue as tired as we were. It was our first time and we learned alot aboout the best way to compete, We should have taken more time between our turns and not hurried from peron to person. It would have eased some of the fatigue.

This race the terrain is listed as moderate to Difficult. It had 2 WALLS, that were 25′ and 35′ several stream crossings, 2 or 3 climbs that were significantly long (1/2 to 1 1/2 mile)

I would say it is a combination of physical strain and mental fatigue. At sonme point in time you just need rest!

We are planning on doing the Old Peublo 24 hour in Feb. But trying to get a 4 man team.

Yea, He passed me on one of my laps going up hill faster than I go down. He was pretty cool, he always had good encouraging things to say as he FLEW by you! I watched him carve a couple of turns and he was pretty smooth on two wheels

There were several really fast guys there and some pretty amazing women as well.

    • #84552

were able to split up the time ya’ll rode (you do 3 hrs and then your team mate does 3 and then you…), or were you having to ride together at the same time?

    • #84553

It’s a relay when there is more than 1 rider, You have a choice how you ride, We chose to go one on one off except for at night where we did two laps each so we could catch some zzz.

Nope, Just will be better prepared next time. Probably wont do a duo, more than likeley a quad team. Although the two of us are going to do a 12 hours in a couple of months

It had 2 WALLS, that were 25′ and 35′ .

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but what are walls?

No Such thing as a stupid question. Only Stupid answers. Picture a half pipe in the dirt. A wall is usually an Extremly steep climb, (in this case near vertical) and it is frequently preceeded by an equal decent or drop.

Hope that helps. Of course that is my description and it is highly possible I am mis-informed. But that is what I am talking about.

I am racing next week in my first endurance race which is just a six hour event and I am running with a team mate. I just started racing this year in a series called the "Southern Classic Series". I only race three races out of the whole series in the beginner class. Next season I plan to race the beginner class for the whole season. I have race a couple of none sanctioned events since the end of the season and now I planning the six hour race. I am really pumped and can’t wait until race day. I will have to build myself up to a 24 hour event though.

I was checking out the Southern Classic Series website. Looks interesting. I’d love to hear more about your race experiences.

Good luck on your race next week.

I am not a real good person on Training advice, I just kind of know what works for me. However… I have been road riding Long distance (100 miles plus) for about two years, so the leg fitness has never been a real issue. Making the transition to Mountain biking long distance was really a progression of Core Fitness.

The bigest thing I do is Ride ALOT. I put in about 150 to 200 miles a week on the road and a minimum of 2 to 4 hours on the mountain bike. In addition I do a lot of core strength exercises at night before I turn in. Although not as many of these as I should. If I was going to do more Long Mtn. bike ride I would spend more time on the dirt.

The funny thing is after the race my legs were not that sore, it was my core, (Abbs, chest, shoulders, arms) some of that has to do with my technique is not the best on a mountain bike. If you read any of the cycling mags they always have good training tips. Some work for me some don’t.

And by the way, I don’t really race to win in endurance events, thats for the REALLY dedicated guys. It’s more the experience and survival. What place I come in is usually a bonus, not the goal.

      Happy riding

fleetwood, I’ve be moutain biking for just over three years now and just started racing this year. I would have to say that my biggest mistake was waiting almost three years before racing. When I first started riding I had no desire to race then a year later I purchased a Santa Cruz BLT which is an All Mountain bike and I still had no desire to race. My riding buddies were trying to talk me into racing but I said no because I figured that it would take the fun out of riding. Well I finally met a new rider that lives just down the road from me and we started riding together and he kept talking about trying a race out. I guess that I finally got talked into it and boy am I glad. It actually has helped me get over a plateau that I was at in my riding. I contribute this to be around other racers and getting tips from them from everything from bike setup, and maintenance to how many fingers to use when applying brakes. Granted you have to take these tips and find the ones that work for you specifically but it gives you so many more things to try while training. Bike mags and here on singletracks forum is a great sorce of knowledge that can be tapped. Now when you get advice or read about things they will never work for you if you don’t get out on your bike. Time on the bike will be your best friend.
