A 21-year-old Rapid City man is dead after a mountain biking accident Saturday afternoon near Rockerville.
The victim had been riding with a friend on a U.S. Forest Service trail near Silver Mountain Road about 3:20 p.m., according to Pennington County Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Foster.
The man’s friend said the victim was going down a steep hill when he hit a small rock in the trail, lost control of his bike, came off the bike and hit a tree, Foster said.
The victim suffered a serious head injury. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
“It was just a tragic accident,” Foster said. He said the man, who was reported to be a very experienced rider, was wearing a helmet.
The identity of the victim is not being released until his family has been notified.

Wow, you never know what can happen thats why you should live every moment like it could be your last.
But it leads me to wonder if he was wearing a helmet that was certified or had been in a crash before. Some folks do not keep those kinds of things in mind. I saw at least six riders on the trials with out helmets this weekend, that just makes me cringe!!

I know it’s natural to try to find fault in something particular(substandard helmet, improperly geared rider) but the fact of the matter is that your CPU and other organs are connected by an incredibly delicate network of nerves. When you’re hurtling down the road, even properly geared, it only takes an unlucky angle when landing to cut or injure the network making all the stuff quit talking to each other.
Take it from a guy with something called "Organic Brain Trauma" 😀

I have to agree. I can’t tell you how many times I have been geared up with helmet, pads, etc. and manage to hit the one area not covered!

Agreed. I’ve lost enough friends in motorcycle accidents to know you can never be too careful or too geared up. Seeing people on two wheels without a helmet makes me cringe.

Very sad to hear of a fellow rider down – be safe, guys. We love a hobby that is quite dangerous.
His family is in my prayers tonight.
