I recently moved to Big Spring Texas. It’s a little town about an hour East of Odessa, and 2 hours south of Lubbock. I’m trying to find some trails like we had back home (mostly just word of mouth trails here and there away from civilization. I haven’t found even one MTB trail near Big Spring that isn’t paved. The closest one I can find is in Odessa and it’s mostly man-made with a terrible view of the suburbs at every turn. I plan to make a trip to San Angelo soon, but I’d hate to have to drive an hour and a half when I want to ride. Any suggestions?

Man, it doesn’t look good. I checked and Singletracks has zero trails within 25 or even 50 miles of Big Spring. Within 75 miles you pick up Odessa and San Angelo but that’s a long way to go every time you want to ride! Within 100 miles you’ve got exactly 7 trails to choose from:

I’ve only visited Texas a few times but what strikes me about the state is that it seems like every square inch of land is privately owned, making public MTB trails few and far between. I wonder if there are some ranchers you can befriend who might have trails (or at the very least, land) you can ride?

Yeah it’s looking pretty rough. Looking around big spring, it looks like it would be prime riding material. I’ll probably take a trip out to San Angelo to hold me over. Luckily, I’ll be out of here by March, and I’ll have a few more options back home. Thanks though!

Maybe the West Texas Cycling Association people can help you.

I was going to suggest Palo Duro Canyon State Park but DANG! It’s nearly as far for you as it is me!

I guess if you have another reason to go up there (maybe visit Amarillo?) it would be worth it to take the bike. I’ve watched a few youtube vids of Palo Duro rides and it seems like it would be worth taking the bike along on an already planned trip to the area.

Good luck. Dallas has some nice trails, Austin, San Antonio, I have never ventured out there where you are for riding, now I can see why. If you have a pickup truck with a lift kit and a gun to shoot on the open range, that’s about as good as it gets out there.
