Hey all. New to the forum after lurking ofr a couple of years. Great place so far. I am heading to the Lake Placid area this summer for vacation, and was wondering about any good places to do some bike packing/long riding. Have checked out the Flume Falls trails as well as some others. I would be considered an intermediate level biker, but my fiance is definitely beginner. We are both more interested in good XC type riding. I am "in training" for getting into the bike-packing/long trip kind of riding.
I grew up riding BMX in the early 80’s, and a bit of single track/XC stuff in college.
Was just wondering if there are any known fire road or other trails like that…
Also looking for the same type of trails/riding opportunities around the Great Lakes area. I live in Ohio and would love to do some weekend jaunts closer to home as well…

I don’t know the area [i:1wao5u6q]extremely[/i:1wao5u6q] well, but I have lived in Watertown, about 3 hours southwest, for the past three years and have made a number of jaunts into the area. Last summer, I did the Black Fly Challenge, a 40 miler dirt road race through the woods out that way. First time racing on my little 26" Cannondale Trail 5, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Look it up; I think at least part of the course would qualify as a fire road.
I was hoping to race it this year, but work and stuff. I’m confident I can at least make podium in the MTB sport class after the past year of work.
