Well, I finally cleaned the bike after a pretty messy ride a couple of weeks ago (I know, I know, long overdue). The sadder part is that I haven’t ridden since that day. My bike has been calling out to me — ride me, clean me, let’s do something!
Anyway, I hung the bike up on my hitch mount bike rack, got some hot soapy water, and started wiping it down under the light of my garage flood lights and a pretty bright work light.
I have one gear brush that came in handy, but other than that I used a small sponge. When done washing and rinsing, I dried it off as best as I could, and then degreased and lubed the chain (would you believe it is the first time I have done that?). I tried to lube some other moving parts, but I’m not sure how effective I was. I’ve got some learning to do there. Hopefully I did more good than harm.
I think I’ve got some front derailleur issues — doesn’t want to go to the big chainring. Sounds like a little grinding going on. I don’t use it much, but I may need the LBS to check that out for me.
All in all I’d say I had a good and productive time. Beats sitting on the couch. In the light of day, I am sure I’ll find plenty of grime left but it was good to give it a bath. It needed it.

Do yourself a favor and put a couple of drops of lube on the pivot points on the front derailleur.
