I’ve been very bad

I broke rule # 1 last night. I got to a trail head and realized I had forgotten my helmet (I thought I had already packed it).

I was intending to just do a few miles and explore the fire roads… so even though I know it’s a huge no-no, I saddled up and went out anyway.

What’s even worse is that I ended up doing 7 miles of very rooty and rocky terrain (see Ashland State Park pics in Massachusetts trails) after the first 2 miles of fire road were exhausted.

That was [i:2uwu5y25]very [/i:2uwu5y25]stupid of me. I’ve had a serious concussion and am very prone to repeat brain injuries as a result. I broke the cardinal rule of biking. As such, I open myself to your beratement. Please, scold me. Tell me that no single day of riding is worth the risk of destroying not only my life, but the lives of those who love me. Make me feel bad. I need it!

What I want to add, however, is that my confidence was COMPLETELY shaken knowing I didn’t have a helmet. Every rock, stick, berm, and loose patch of soil spelled "E-R" to me. I haven’t ridden without a helmet, not even down the street, since I got into MTBing, and I should’ve just turned around and hit the weights or gone running.

Keep the melon safe! It may not be pretty but it’s all you got. 😄 Later,

You should take your bike away from yourself!

That said, I’m glad you were able to make it out safely.

All the more reason not to ride. Fear on the trail often sets us up for wrecks.

Even after a concussion? And you know better? Need to take the time to go back and get it!

    • #112227

      two words: gary busey

    • #112228

You will forget what you say, you can’t keep track of numbers, you’ll forget what you promised, you can’t remember the truth so you tell lies to get by. Politics? Could happen, watch out! 😄 Later,

hey fat billy, what is you avatar? looks like a turntable, or maybe a gas pump?

I have seen a few people ride without their helmets. I do not crash much, however I do use my helmet to block branches and/or face slappers. I have not ridden without mine. I mistakenly ran over my last helmet with my fishing boat (was on the roof of my truck). Replaced the helmet within the week.

That’s the main point I bring up while talking to folks not wearing helmets.

there’s also places to ride with zero helio access. crack your noggin and you’re in serious life-threatening trouble.

always wear suitable protective gear. mtn biking can be a high-speed contact sport (contact with the ground, trees, rocks, etc). a helmet is the absolute minimum.

have enough respect for the sport that you understand there will be times that you will crash.

    • #112234

Not everyone is willing to admit they’re going to crash. That’s why I bring up the hitting of branches with their heads. They usually don’t have a rebuttal to that point 😃

      good one.

i tell all my newb friends that they’re going to crash. part of the learning process, and a small but necessary sacrifice to the god of dirt.

Don’t vote for Obama and we’ll call it even…. Or as punishment go down to Sully’s tap and drink crappy PBR on tap with the Charlestown dirtbags for a night..

    • #112237

Hey, I said, "I do not crash much". By saying that I know that I am going to crash. I even got one on video. Though not much to watch…

    • #112238

I forgot my helmet a few times when I first started riding and complete strangers would yell, "you REALLY need to buy a helmet"!
After going over the bars at a whopping 6mph, and landing right on my head(with helmet, thank God), I just remember thinking how loud the thud was when I landed. Have not forgotten my helmet since! Shoes yes, helmet no. 😀

Hey, Sully’s Tap is [i:2f5zp8f7]kinda [/i:2f5zp8f7]fun. Assuming it’s prior to a concert at the Garden, that is. 😄

i didn’t know this was a partisan political site. pretty demeaning post all around.

why not just leave the politics and name calling for other sites?

    • #112241

If I didn’t have a helmet, my hair would get all messy and everyone would point at me and laugh.

    • #112242

This is not a political site but most of the members might think you smell funny if you vote for Obama again. Obama fans should only ride on trails frequently used by horses so they don’t run out of compost for thier gardens. 😄 Later,

no, you’re mistaken. that’s just for rednecks. 😄

let’s keep the politics off here. please.

    • #112244

Ugh, can we can the political crap, please?
