I’m not one of those people who ride with headphones ignoring everything that’s going on around me…unless I’m riding DH. Last season I would put on headphones and slide my helmet down over them, not being able to hear anything else, shouting a loud “huh!?” at whoever tried to talk to me while I fumbled in my pocket to get to the pause button. Not to mention, the cable was a PITA to deal with, always getting in the way. BUT I really enjoyed getting pumped up on music, zoning out and not worrying about anything but the trail ahead.
I think I’ve solved all of the above mentioned problems. I picked up a Skullcandy Home Brew kit (not the best quality speakers, whatever…it works), an iPod Shuffle, and some “permanent mounting” double sided tape and went to town on my Giro Remedy. The result:
A self contained sound system that sounds great. The padding stops my ears from hitting the speaker pods and I can hear everything outside of the helmet if it’s not turned up all the way. I’m giving it a test run this weekend to see just how permanent that sticky tape really is.
Note: I imagine on a REALLY hard impact, the speaker may hit my ear…just to be safe, I’m going to remove the speakers when I race because I’m going to be pushing myself harder and faster than a typical ride and the chances of wrecking then are much higher.

Looks pretty cool. I did something like this on my road bike helmet. But sometimes with the non exhaust I have on it I would rather go back to ear buds! All of my riding buddies and I had our ghetto sign language down pretty pat anyways!

If the shuffle is permanently stuck to your visor, how do you charge it?

😆 I flip the helmet over and place it right next to the usb port on my laptop. That stupid charge cable that comes with it is way too short.

Ah, the charge cable for that must be different than my old shuffle… it used to be more of a dock-style charger.

Yeah that would have made things even more difficult. Now it’s a 3 inch headphone jack to usb cable. One of my roommates already asked me: "uh dude, why are you charging your helmet?"

Hahaha, that is hilarious 😆
Ever try these [url:1gs2l73b]http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-AS20J-Active-Headphones-Hangers/dp/B0015AHRFK[/url:1gs2l73b] they work great under my (motorcycle) helmet. Also work good with normal bike helmet. They’re not noise cancelling, so you can still hear some outside noises, which can be handy!

I have tried those! Those are the exact headphones I use for running (and occasionally riding with my xc helmet) and I paid a lot more for them when I impulse bought them in a store sometime last year…darn it! I have odd shaped ears I guess because earbuds constantly pop out if I move around too much and those Sonys solved that problem. I like them because you don’t even realize they’re there once you get moving.

Cool setup. probably much more cost efficient than my Cardo setup on my motorcycle helmet but worth it for the Bluetooth lol
