I loaded my beloved Dragon 29er on my bike rack this AM and headed off down the road. Sitting at a stop light when BLAM somone ran into me at 40mph, no breaking or skidding just whammo. My first thought was something unprintable and my next thought was "my bike is on the back".

I jumped out and went to the rear of the car, the carnage was horrendous. Long story short, bike DOA along with my Thule rack.

Goodbye bike, while I didn’t know you all that long we sure had fun!

By the way all humans involved were fine.

      What a bummer! Seriously! 😢

I really hope that the jackass that slammed into you is insured in full. They need their license & driving privileges stripped away from them permanently operating their vehicle like that. I hope all goes well with the replacement of your vehicle, steed and rack.

      On-On!

    • #102697

      that really really sucks

    • #102698

Will insurance cover your bike, rack, and car?? Maybe you can gouge him for an extra thousand and get an upgrade…

Sounds just like this world as it is…… 😮

For some one that used to work with the youth in a Christian perspective, that is a bit harsh don’t you think there mtggreg1?

I hope he does get the true worth back out of all this, but with insurance companies and the rapid depreciating value of items, everyone looses here, especially him.

      Anyways, good luck bro! On-On!

For all of the extra effort he just put him through, I think it’d be only fair. Plus the insurance company would be paying it, not him.

Oh, let me quote you quick:

      WOW! 😮

Thus one of the reasons I do not post that much anymore!!! 😉

mtbgreg1, my quoted comment above has nothing to do with gouging anyone as you so elegantly posted previously…

mtbgreg1 wrote: Will insurance cover your bike, rack, and car?? Maybe you can gouge him for an extra thousand and get an upgrade…

It has to do with taking his driving privileges away permanently, not gouging him for an extra $1000. Typical worldy thinking as usual. Go figure! 😏

OK, back to the OP’s topic. Enough said! 😉

My point is, where do you get off for criticizing me for encouraging him to try to get a little compensation for this trouble when YOU just called the driver a jackass and said he should have all of his privileges removed?

Firstly, you called him a jackass.

Secondly, why should he lose his license for one crash? A crash could happen to anyone, one day you’re distracted, the sun is in your eyes, and BAM you can rear end someone. He should just have to pay for the damages, and if he gets the insurance company to throw in a little extra, what is the harm?

Stop all the bickering fellas. The man just lost his bike!

I have a hitch-mount rack and I’ll admit there have been times when I feared this was going to happen. My first thought was not about me or my truck, but my bike. Fortunately, there have been no incidents.

@ jamis29er — glad to hear no one was hurt and I hope you are made whole when all is said and done.

Once more again……Back to the OP’s topic! Enough said!

One thing has nothing to do with the other point blank so move on.

My deepest apologies to the OP here for this "Forrest Gump" crap. I really hope that you recover at least what is owed to you, because right is right.

    • #102706

That sucks man! Glad to hear everyone is alright.

    • #102707

This has happened to two friends of mine and in both cases insurance covered the bike and the rack.

I carry mine on the roof for just this reason!

    • #102708

Here’s an idea. Find something on the damaged bike that is still usable and put that item on the new bike. That way the old bike lives on. Sounds silly? Yes! Am I silly? Yes! This insures your Carma doesn’t back over your Dogma. 😄 Later,

    • #102709

Sucks that it happened. But at least you and the others are OK. You can get a new bike, human parts are a little harder to replace. I hope it all works out OK. I know I would be upset to lose my Blur – long live the memory of your Jamis. Now you should go out and get you a new one.

This should be fine as long as his bike filled out an organ donor card.

    • #102711

Glad you’re okay, man – bikes and racks can be replaced, but the riders can’t!

Maybe you’re okay because you’re body is so freaking tough from all that biking!

*insert Tim Allen "arr arr arr" laugh*

Make sure to give your bike a proper burial, don’t just put it out with the trash. When I crashed my Trek to the point of not being able to repair it, I stripped it down (removing the oils and other pollutants) and took it out to the middle of my pond for burial. It’s now a fish reef that will live on forever!! 😃

    • #102713

That really blows! I have a hitch rack as well and constantly concerned about this happening to me.
Sorry man, Hope it works out for you.

    • #102714

This is one of the reasons I mount my steeds to the roof or in the back of my truck, so to keep this from happening. I do not trust anyone enough behind the wheel to use rear mounts.

This is my worst nightmare! I drive ten times more carefully when there’s a bike on back.

Getting a new bike is always fun, but I don’t think it ever offsets losing the old one.

Just curious, now that a couple of weeks have passed, how is this all working out. Is the bike going to be replaced by the person who hit you, or his/her insurance company? Did they give you full value for the bike? How did they handle the destruction of the Thule rack? Was it all lumped together in the damages to your vehicle? Are you in a no-fault state?

I am wondering about all of this because I was just about to move my bike from the top of the car to the rear, mounted on a hitch receiver. Now I’m wondering.

I was going to make that change, because the last time I loaded my bike, the fork slipped through my fingers and now I have a nice fork tip shaped dent in the roof of an otherwise unblemished Mercedes. Grrrrrr!!!

    • #102717

Not sure how I missed this but, I’ll echo the other’s sentiments…glad you are alright..bummer about your bike. I hope everything turned out alright. We’d all love to hear an update on how this turned out. (hopefully for the best)

    • #102718

That sucks, but glad all humans were OK!

    • #102719

Thanks all for the words of wisdom and support. It’s funny how a bike becomes a personal thing, especially after customizing or upgrading or just plain riding the hell out of it.

Update: got full replacement value for the bike! So now I have researched and ridden and pondered several bike options. Aluminum, carbon, titanium, or steel? I ordered a blue Trans Am 29er frame (steel frame from Transition in the Pacific Northwest, thanks to Duke at Dropnzone) and the build will be similar to my Jamis but I think actually better in some ways. XO 2×10 derailleurs and shifters, Reba RLT Ti fork, Shimano xls brakes, riding on Stans Arch Rims (white with red Hope Pro II hubs). The handlebar, grips, stem, and saddle all are salvage from my old bike.

Just waiting on everything to arrive for assembly. Very stoked to throw a leg over this new ride and learn how she rolls.

My old steel 29er will begin a new life as a somewhat out of alignment single speed. With a new wheelset and some frame bending she will be a fun (slightly wobbly) casual ride.

      More updates to follow.

    • #102720

Sweet man, sounds like things are turning out OK for ya!

    • #102721

Glad everyone is okay, but Im really sorry your bike was smashed.

    • #102722

After much bending and rebending of her frame the rear dropouts almost line up, some new paint to cover the raw steel where her old paint was torn off, Velocity rims in bright orange, red grips, and a Surly single speed kit….my Dragon 29er rides again!

Her reincarnated single speed version may not win any build contests but hey, alls well that ends well……

    • #102723

Pics? I’m always intrigued by the repurposing of a bike.
