Well I did a stupid thing today. While adjusting my brakes I managed to get my finger caught in the disc while spinning the wheel and sliced a nice chunk damn near clean off. Went to urgent care and they took x rays (nothing fractured) and put in six stitches in the top inch of my finger and through my finger nail. What sucks is I won’t know if I can keep that part of my finger until I go see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow and find out if it has to be amputated or not. What sucks even worse that that is the weather here in Michigan has been around 70 degrees for the past two days and looks like it is going to be in the 50’s and 60’s for at least another week or so, grrrrrrr.
I know it was a stupid mistake I just hope I am not the only bone head to ever do this, lol. 😈

I’ve heard of it happening, happens alot more than you would think.I also read a couple of storys of little kids getting there fingers chopped off completely when they try and touch the cool looking brake rotors while the parents arent watching. Can never be too safe…….

Oooh man,I bet you will be a bit more careful next time and I’m sorry to hear that happened.I’m a machinist and almost daily put my fingers within 2" of a very fast moving cutting tool,I am always careful and pay attention to what I’m doing even if I have to ignore someone and be rude for a second and ask them what they just said.
Good luck man and be careful!

Bummer F7Cannon
Like one of the other posters said, it probably happens more than you think. Couple of years ago my uncle was messing around with his car brakes and did the same thing. He came out of it OK, but with a shorter digit.
Hope you recover well.

Your not the only one..I had a child once slice his own finger off in the shop once…We warned the child and his parents not to spin the wheels on the bikes twice..He still proceeded to do so and then jamed his finger in the disc..Well I am sure you know the rest of the story.

Dang, I never thought about that. Everytime my bike is on the rack and my kid is around, he can’t help but start spinning tires. Now, I have even more reason to tell him to stop. Thanks for the heads up.

You’ll likely get to keep the sliced flesh. Your callous (if you have any, from, say, playing guitar) will fall off. Either way, too bad you missed the great weekend (you don’t want to hear how I took advantage of it (Stony Creek)), but you’ll be able to ride again in about two weeks, given a similar accident I had a few years ago. I was playing hockey in about two to three weeks.

Actually I got to ride Burchfield and Rose Lake all weekend!! I was at least smart enough to do this Sunday evening after riding. 😆
It’s good to know that I’ll be back out on the trails in a few weeks. Weather permitting. And now I don’t feel like a complete idiot after hearing similar stories. Just have to be more careful and not get distracted.
As for you who are worried about your kids hurting themselves I think some large zip ties might do the trick while the bikes are on the racks.

Sorry to hear that. A friend of mine that worked at a bike store sliced his finger really bad once (not as bad as you) and started wearing those mechanix gloves that you can buy at the auto parts stores. He said they saved him a couple times.

I hate to think of it as a season that is coming to an end, but the reality is that it will be tougher and tougher to get rides in. Shorter days, colder temps, etc. I hope to ride this weekend and have a camping/biking trip planned for the following weekend. I could definitely see things really slowing down after Thanksgiving.

I was adjusting my calipers last night and without paying attention my pinky finger got caught in the spokes while spinning the wheel to work out the light rub, it I barely got it out before the wheel made it back around to the fork.
A friend of mine back in middle school wasn’t so lucky, lost his pinky playing with cards that he taped to his forks.

Back when I was in grade school riding my bmx bike I had just got done tensioning my chain after changing the rear gear,I rode up to the jumps and reached down while coasting to check the chain tension, the same time I grabbed the inside of the chain just behind the front sprocket I started to pedal and in my finger went half way around the sprocket with one of the teeth sticking inside my finger. At first I couldnt do anything because I was so surprised at my stupidity, but then my brain kicked in again and I remembered I had a freewheel and I then pedaled backwards and out came my bleeding finger with a new hole in it. 😠 😕

Sorry for the bad luck. I hope your finger heals up soon & you get back on the trails. When I was eight years old I was riding my bike barefooted & got my middle toe caught between the chain & crank but I didnt have freewheel on my bike. I had to peddle the rest of the way to get my foot out. I guess the doctor said there wasnt enough tendon there to sew it back on so he cut the rest of it off. I have been living with nine toes ever since. LOL…but its never slowed me down. Good luck with the recovery!

I pedeled trough then looked down & saw my toe dangling by a peice of skin. Then I fell over & mildly when into shock from all the blood. Yeah for an eight year old to see his toe hanging like that was pretty shocking but I made it through just fine. Rip niner! I like it! HAHA
