SAN ANGELO, Texas — The term "high school team" usually brings to mind sports such as football, basketball, track or baseball.

That’s rapidly changing across the nation. It’s also about to change locally with the development of the new San Angelo Composite High School Mountain Bike Team.

The San Angelo team will be part of the Texas High School Mountain Bike League, along with teams being formed across the state in areas such as Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Lubbock, San Antonio, College Station, Laredo and Houston.
Unlike many high school sports, cycling is a family-friendly activity that students can continue year-round and throughout their lives.

The Texas High School Mountain Bike League is a project league within the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (http://www.nationalmtb.org), headquartered in Berkeley, Calif.

      Washington:

Talbott, the creator of Compass Outdoor Adventures, (http://www.compassoutdoor.org) and Auletta, a self-described “motivated parent advocate, who wants to see this get set up so my sons can be on a mountain bike,” have long wanted to add mountain-biking to Mount Si’s sports or club offerings. It just made sense to Auletta.

“We’ve got these amazing trails, and we’ve got lots of kids who mountain bike,” she said.

Until last year, liability concerns kept the sport off the school-sanctioned activity list, but “Washington State has since joined the national mountain biking association for high school teams,” Auletta said. “That kind of opened the door for us.”

“We would characterize it as a ‘no-cut’ sport,” he said. “We’re going to tailor our practices so all the kids are getting what they need.”

Practices will begin in early February, and will include parent-led rides twice a week during the weekdays, with longer rides on the weekends. The Saturday before each race, so the team will ride the course together, then discuss how to handle its obstacles.

Mountain biking is a lifelong sport, organizers say, with lasting benefits.

IMO, it’s really cool to see mountain biking spreading as a high school sport! I would totally have competed on a mountain bike team in high school. I also love how inclusive everyone is: helping those who may never have had experience get into the sport, and having parents get involved by helping to lead rides.

This trend is quickly gaining steam: I can’t wait to see what high school MTBing will look like a decade from now!

Minnesota is one of the most recent states to add a High School MTB League:

I wanted to attend their (Minnesota’s) open house. It’s only a few hours away, but real life took precedence.

Their site has been active for a while. I’m hoping I can check out at least one race. Rochester will only be 1.5 hours away when I move after graduation.
