Hi, my name is Tim and I got into mountain biking about 4 months ago. I have a Diamondback Response Sport that I picked up for about $400.00. After riding this bike for about a week I decided to upgrade all of my components. Tell me what you think. Only upgrades are listed.

      Handlebar: Race Face Deuce
      Stem: Salsa (oversized)
      Headset: the pig by FSA
      Fork: Rock Shox Revelation
      Wheels: Mavic Crossride
      Bottom Bracket: Race Face X-Type
      Crankset: Race Face Evolve XC
      Pedals: Truvativ Holzfeller
      Front Derailleur: Shimano XT
      Rear Derailleur: Shimano LX
      Rear cog: Shimano 9 speed
Seat post: Race Face Evolve DH
      Seat post clamp: Salsa

Besides a full suspension any more ideas. Anyway, I love the sport and singletrack is a blast. Hope to see some of you in Loma someday.

      Tim

I forgot to add two items
      Brake levers: Shimano deore
Shifters: Shimano Deore XT 2-way rapid fire

      Welcome to Singletracks, Tim!

It’s great that you’ve gotten into the addict(ahem)… sport, and not just settling on a Walmart deathcycle.

So, I’ll give you the skinny on your upgrade choices. The DB Response is a strongly built hardtail (I have one too)…. and your chosen upgrades are within reason, with only a few exceptions.

I’ll list here your original wish-list, and then my suggestions in parentheses….. The only unknown variable here is cost, but I’ll keep it within reason…. deal? 😀

      Handlebar: Race Face Deuce
(Good, just go with the riser version)
      Stem: Salsa
(Go with a Bontrager or Ritchey 4-bolt, 80-100mm stem)
      Headset: FSA Pig
(Overkill…. Get a Cane Creek or WTB. The Pig headset is for DH/Freeride, and has deep bearing cups that are a pain to install and remove, and could possibly ruin the headtube if you ever want to change it out.)
      Fork: Rock Shox Revelation
(Within reason, and a good start.)
      Wheels: Mavic Crossride
(‘nough said. The Crossrides will last you a long while for normal trail work)
      Bottom Bracket: Race Face X-Type
      Crankset: Race Face Evolve XC
      (Good choice, lightweight, and durable)
      Pedals: Truvativ Holzfeller
(Overkill, unless you like flats and don’t mind the extra weight. I’d suggest some CrankBrother’s Mallets…. Best of both worlds)
      Front Derailleur: Shimano XT
      Rear Derailleur: Shimano LX
      Rear cog: Shimano 9 speed
(Ditch Shimano. Go with a SRAM X-9 Drivetrain & shifters. X-9 smokes Shimano XT in terms of durability and shifting accuracy.)
Seat post: Race Face Evolve DH
(Too heavy. Get the Evolve XC, and you’ll be happy.)
      Seat post clamp: Salsa
      (Hey, why not??? 😉 )

And don’t forget about your brakes. Throw away whatever came OEM on your bike, and invest in some quality stoppers. I highly recommend Magura Julies as entry-level hydraulic brakes!

So there you go. Have fun!

Welcome Tim. It really excites me how many people are getting into Mountain biking these days. I figured this sport was pretty much on the decline when I entered but it really seems to be going strong. I wish you many years of happy and safe riding.

I have got to agree with Bombardier on the X9 SRAM. I got them on my new BLT and the are the bomb as the younger generations say. Cleanest shifting I have ever had and no adjustments three weeks of hard riding. They even shift well under pressure and if you are like me and get into a climb just to poop out on a higher gear the sram will shift with no problem.

I wouldn’t say that for where I live – its definitely on the upswing. I am somewhat new, myself, been riding three years and I simply love it. It’s now a permanent fixture in my life, and my kids life because I take them biking when ever I can.

      Welcome Tim!

Thanks for the info guys. My first time out with that new headset I got sand inside it. I spent the next two hours taking it all apart and cleaning it!
Maybe a Cane Creek or a Chirs King would do better.
