      Hi there,

Nice site. I love how much trail data you have and the option to earn access by contributing.

I’m new to singletracks.com and have a few questions about uploading GPS data.

When uploading a GPS trace it may cover more than just one trail yet the submit form requires a trail name. Do I just give any name? How will the given name matter later?

For the most part I’ll be contributing trails in new areas and plan to cover the whole are with multiple downloads.

Does it help if I process the GPS data first and make each trail its own segment?

Hey Kai, each trail map needs to be associated with a trail listing. So, if the trail you want to upload the track for doesn’t exist in our database yet, you’ll need to add it using this form: http://www.singletracks.com/php/addtrail.php Just be sure to run a search first to make sure it doesn’t already exist!

If you’re uploading a GPS track for a complicated area that’s more of a trail system, that’s fine. If you want to add the individual trail segments to the trail system page, you can do that, to create a complex trail system listing. Then, you can even upload an overal GPS map for the trail system, and individual GPS maps for the shorter segments, if you’d like.

For an example of a complex trail system listing, complete with sub-trails, a complex GPS map for the complete system, and a few smaller maps for the sub trails, go here: http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … ntain.html

Also, for a step-by-step guide to uploading GPS data, check out this link: http://help.singletracks.com/solution/c … tracks-com

Let me know if you have any questions along the way!

Greg, I think I get it.

Each database entry is basically just a collection of GPS coordinates. It may be a trail, a network of trails or multiple trails linked together. Sub trails are simply entries that are linked to a given area but they have their own set of GPS coordinates.

So for a simple trail network, like I would find on conservation land, I would just create one “trail” called “blah blah trails” which is a collection of GPS coordinates of the trails in that system. I think was confused by the notion of trail as an entry and saw it as just that, a single trail.

How are the complex trail systems created? simply by specifying a new “parent trail system”?

OK, so technically we don’t need to have any GPS data to have a trail listing on the website, but once there’s a trail listing you can add GPS coordinates for a trailhead to it as well as a full GPS track. So the listing comes first, then the GPS.

But yeah, you’re getting the basic idea for a trail system. To create a complex trail system:
      1. Create the main trail listing. In the above example. It’s called the Bull / Jake Mountain Trail System.
Now technically you could just stop at this step and add GPS data, but if you want to add more detailed data about the trails in the system, (if, for instance, some are more difficult than others) go on to step 2.
      2. Go to the "add new trail page," and then, like you said, just specify the previous listing as the parent listing.
Doing this will turn any individual trail listing into a trail system. So, let’s say you see a trail listing that looks like an individual trail, but in fact it’s a trail system. You can create a new trail using the "add trail" page, specify the previous listing as the parent listing, and voila! you have a trail system.

Hopefully that makes sense 😀 I should write up a more organized guide on how to make a trail listing…

Thats cool! We have a number of trail systems here in St. Louis that are listed on the site as trails. I will start to work on getting the systems around me broken up into the seperate trails for each system!

Sweet! Looking forward to checking them out!

I uploaded GPS data and it is now published, but I think there is an issue how the data is interpreted:

      http://www.singletracks.com/mountain-bi … &view=topo

      Image

the data I uploaded contained segments that represent individual trails. But the display of the data on the map seems to join segments which creates straight line trails that don’t actually exist. Can this be fixed?

      Hey Kai,

I noticed those straight lines. I can manually go back in and remove them from the file, but in the future, make sure you include individual track segments in the .gpx file if the segments don’t connect. If they do all connect, you can create just one track in the file, but if they are disjointed you need to have multiple tracks.

The ideal situation is one continuous track that shows the best way to hit everything that the trail system has to offer, all at once.

      Greg,

That’s what I thought too. For now fix what is there and in the future I’ll upload individual segments. I’ll also add a sub-track to show a good way to ride the trails.

      Current map is fixed.

      Thanks Kai!

What is the underlying topo data that you are using? I see some trails on the topo maps themselves but it doesn’t seem to be OSM data since I’m not seeing trails I contributed to OSM.

We’re using the NeoTreks maps: http://neotreks.com/ While they don’t have some of the benefits of open source-style maps, Neotreks is constantly updating their maps with new trails, and we think the layer of detail, especially when it comes to topo shading, showing elevation, and trail names, is unrivaled. They’re pretty expensive, too, so for our users, getting access to them via Singletracks is a pretty sweet deal ;)

Nice job, was that shiny new degree in marketing? 😆 J/K Greg, that is really cool… I really need to start taking advantage of that feature.

They’re pretty sweet for doing trail research, I’ve used them quite a bit myself.

I especially like the fact that they’re incorporated into our latest edition of the mobile app. Now once we are able to cache maps offline in the app, we’ll have trail navigation down pat!
