Dirt Rag has a blurb about some land deals that could potentially affect mountain bike trails in and around Fruita. The article isn’t specific about which trails might be affected but it does have info about who to contact to voice your opinion:

If you’ve ridden Fruita you know this area is special, let’s do everything we can to help out! Note: April 26th is the last day to submit your opinion.

Oh yeah, please, please voice your opinion on this. If you’ve ever ridden there you know what a treasure it is. Get the word out to every biker you know. The deadline is in the next couple days.

Also, see the IMBA advocacy page at [url:elk92fx3]https://secure2.convio.net/imba/site/Advocacy?JServSessionIdr011=10d27rlu41.app6b&cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=117[/url:elk92fx3]

      Consider my opinion voiced. 😀

You better read the regulations (see page v of the linked document) before you go sending the BLM an e-mail. It says that any protest sent via electronic mail will be dismissed. IT MUST BE FAXED TO THE NUMBER GIVEN (303)239-3799 or sent hardcopy and received before 4/26/2006 16:00 MDT if you want them to include your protest for any given parcel.

You can find a map of the BLM land for lease here

Yup, JJONAS has it right. Gotta fax! I just faxed a copy of my email.

Btw, the doc contains “EXHIBIT GJ-2GC” which states:

      SCENIC AND NATURAL VALUES STIPULATION

Special design and reclamation measures may be required to protect the outstanding scenic and natural landscape value of the following portion(s) of this lease:

      For the protection of:

To protect scenic and natural values on the Bookcliffs.

Special design and reclamation measures may include transplanting trees and shrubs, fertilization, mulching, special erosion control structures, irrigation, site recontouring to match the original contour, buried tanks and low profile equipment, and painting to minimize visual contrasts. Surface disturbing activities may be denied in sensitive areas, such as unique geologic features and rock formations, visually prominent areas, and [color=orange:2368l2n1]high recreation use areas.[/color:2368l2n1]

This stipulation may be waived or reduced in scope if circumstances change or if the lessee can demonstrate that operations can be conducted without causing unacceptable impacts on the concerns(s) identified

Consider my opinion voiced. I haven’t ridden there yet, and I’m like hell not gonna sit quietly and let those trails get poached.

Well, jeez, how come IMBA doesn’t know that!? This is disturbing. All the biking sites have told people to send emails, and IMBA has a pre-canned form that you can send. So all of those are going to be ignored? Man, we’re doomed! IMBA should have caught that.

A lot of faxes could be sent today. Hopefully IMBA and COPMBA can recover quickly.
