I have a Fox DHX Air shock that has been leaking oil until it drips onto my bike frame. My bike shop sent this shock back to Fox and had it rebuilt in March and it was still leaking when I got it back. I can wipe the piston down before a 2 hr ride and when i get back oil has built up around the sag o-ring and has at least dripped once. Most times I am not even hitting any jumps, just regular single track trails. When I do jump, it’s nothing over 30 inches.

My bike shop called Fox and they said if it is not loosing pressure then theres nothing they can do. The oil on the bike frame is really starting to tick me off. As much as this shock cost I don’t think it should be leaking oil like this. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how was it fixed?

I would contact Fox and get that word directly from them. My understanding is that the air sleeve doesn’t hold any oil. There is some lubricant, but no oil. You will develop crud by the wiper and sag o-ring, but leaking oil is just wrong. Check, double check and triple check that it is actually coming from the air sleeve and not leaking down the shock body and the piston is where it’s pooling bad enough to drip. Fox will ask more intelligent questions. If you don’t like their answers, keep on them. If you remain aggressively polite and avoid indignance they will eventually give you one that is acceptable.

The problem with bike shops regarding suspension is that most shops are struggling to come to terms with the changes in MTB technology. Mountain bikes are no longer juiced up road bikes, but instead they are anorexic Motocross bikes. Your LBS should have never accepted "leaking oil is okay," without a detailed explanation. Then, they should have passed that explanation to you. Fox, Marzocchi, RockShox, and the rest are dealing with this problem from shops as well. Therefore, they are used to dealing with the end user. So, again contact Fox and explain your problem. Fox may just end up giving you a detailed explanation as to why leaking oil isn’t a problem. But, that detailed explanation would make me feel better than what you currently have.

My fox 32 talas went back to fox 4 times untill the problem was solved.I got so tired of hearing it that I started going to other bike shops to see if they had a better policy to get things done.I dont know if it really helped at all,but I felt like I was getting somwhere. In the end,fox came through with an upgraded fork since they were out of the fork that came on my bike. And even then, the new fork they sent was jacked up too.So back it went, finally it worked and I have been riding it ever since happily ever after. It takes patience, although I think fox does have your best interest at heart.
Is your shock under warrenty? If not, there is a place here in colorado called push industeries and they are absolutely the best.I have not actually sent my stuff to them as of yet, although everyone(even here on singletracks, bike mechanics, bike mechanics I personally know, riders, you name it,I’ve heard it from everyone, there the best.)Go to[url:l2ercf8t]http://www.pushindustries.com/index.php[/url:l2ercf8t]

It is leaking down the shock body. I was just calling it the piston. As for the air sleeve not holding any oil I cna’t find anything on there web site that speaks of oil myself. It just shows that the sleeve seals have lubricant. I have no idea but I wished that they would give a little better manuals with these shocks. I believe that I will contact them myself and see what I can get done. This shock is still under warranty from the last repair which was done under warranty also. Thanks Guys.

I was looking at the Fox website about rebuilding this shock and the kit comes with a packet of lube. After applying the lube to the orings you are supposed to put the rest of it inside the shock body before reassembling. The amount is about 3ccs. This is the fluid that coming out of the shock and I have noticed that after a few days of very hard riding that the dripping has stopped. Maybe when Fox rebuilt the shock they put too much lube inside the shock body and it just needed to get out. It seems to be working fine now. I will be riding tomorrow evening and all of Saturday so that should be the test. I have sent an e-mail to Fox to ask them what will happen once all the lube has escaped.
