As I review our ride from the last days of May 2009 I can only imagine how soon the signs will be posted, the trail markers revised and the tire tracks fade from a long time mountain biking treasure.
Taking advantage of the slow governmental processes, several friends gathered for the 2nd weekend in a row to venture into North Dolly Sods above Canaan Valley, WV before we are forced to abandon enjoying this beautiful place from the seat of our bikes.
It’s more than just the rocks, the roots, the climbs, the stream crossings, the fast decents, the "Wall Of Tear", the majesty of it all. It’s an experience like no other. It will beat you, defeat you and please you all in the same ride. If you have never had the opportunity to challenge this area I hope you enjoy our photo memories of our fading mountain bike treasure. Or you can get over there as quickly as possible to experience it for yourself.
Still legal right now
My favorite trail in the entire area – Rocky Ridge Trail from Raven Ridge down to the Wall of Tears and Forest Service Rd 80.
I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to enjoy several rides here and two in the last two weeks. I’ve now ridden every trail in the North Sods and will always have the memories and the photos to remind me of how awesome the rides were in this place.

ODN, great pics. It may be all I ever get to see of Dolly Sods from the sounds of it. So, what exactly is the issue about closing it off to MTBers?

Well, sorry to say the Bill was passed and signed earlier this year by the Pres. that established this as a Wilderness area. The push was to make it a National Scenic Area which would have protected it but still would have allowed bikes. Wilderness designation does not ! We’re just trying to get in all the rides we can before the signs go up. Hope you can make it.

Thanks for the great post ODN. Glad to see you are milking it for the last days of non-wilderness designated Dolly Sods. Looks like I will probably have to hike that one 😢
Hope the body is recovering well from the ‘barking" episode.

this is discouraging. i HATE knowing there is an incredible trail out there that i’m not allowed to ride! its like the appalachian trail: thousands of miles of singletrack spanning the length of the appalachian mountains, ALL illegal to mountain bikes! grr pisses me off
