Been off the bike for too long, just been busy with other stuff going on. So I was planning to log some miles on Saturday. When I went to bed Friday night the forecast was for rain all day Saturday, but I was planning on riding anyways. Woke up and a storm front had just moved through, and another was a few hours behind it, so I figured I had a window of a few hours before the rain moved in. I got dressed and headed out on the road bike looking for dirt. The storm front broke up. I was dressed and prepared for mid 50*F temps and rain, ended up in mid 70’s and sun. Got a great start to my cycling tan. Got a little burned. The last few miles home I was hammered, and the headwind was brutal. Almost bailed and called for a pick up just 3 miles from home, but my bike was way too dirty to put into the trunk of my wife’s car. Little ringed it the rest of the way.

Ended up with just over 5hrs of ride time, just under 80 miles, all from my front door. Great day out, and road bikes are awesome when you can’t go MTBing.

The day started wet, grey, and a bit foggy. The first stretch of dirt looked inviting. This was my first time on this road. I’ll be back for sure.

Tried out a camera timer app. It works.

Eventually it was too warm for knee warmers, but my pockets were full. The stem is a nice place to put stuff.

      More dirt.

Lots of pavement, lots of rolling hills.

Kid shoes for sale in a podunk gas station. I was the only person in the joint not wearing any camo.

Fence post puppy lovin’ Santa on the side of the road. 😮

      Pretty farmland. More hills.

A North Augusta institution. Almost home…

The bike was pretty angry by the time I got home, but has since been cleaned off, re-lubed, and is ready for more.

Getting a road bike was the best thing I ever did to improve my fitness for MTBing. I wished I had gotten a CX bike instead, so I could fit bigger tires. This one (a Raleigh Clubman) is running 28mm tubeless road tires right now and they do 95% of everything I need, and I can fit a little bigger tire, but not much. The fork is the limiting factor. A 35mm CX tire just barely fits, but it’s tight enough I wouldn’t ride it. A 32mm tire would be great and have acceptable clearance. But, I’d love to have room for a 40-45mm tire, the extra float would be nice.

I bought a road bike my last year in Georgia and loved the crap out of it! Now where I am in CO, however, the roads just aren’t that appealing, and there just isn’t much pavement. There is a ton of gravel and two-track, though, but it’s way too steep and rough for a standard road bike… one of these years a CX bike will wind up on my wishlist to Santa ;)
