My old chainstay guard is history, any brand you all prefer over another?? My last one didn’t seem to last very long. Tired of hearing the old chain slap !! 😠

Just zip tie an old tube on there or some bar tape from a road bike works wonders.

scott makes a realy cool one.need one myself, Good ol’ ducktape 😆

My friend runs a section of an old tire ziptied on. It looks cool.

Mine came with a clear plastic coating like you see on the front of some cars. I was skeptical, but it seems to be working really well.

      clear plastic coating

Yeah, when I got my stumpjumper,I couldnt stand that big black pad on the chain stay, got rid of it and got the clear plastic adhesive strip on there and to be honest,I havent thought about it till I read your post.

I do two things on my bikes…Depending if I want clearance or the added pading and protection.

You can purchase from a UAP store the protective film that you see on some bikes. It comes in a roll that is 8′ long…That is enough tape that you could do a few parts and bikes…But unlike some of the specific bike tape products, it does not cost an arm and a leg…You can get it for about $14..I use it also on spots that would normally suffer from cable rub as well..

Or I use a Lizard Skin protector for the Chain stay. It keeps noise down and can be removed easily for cleaning.

Steve and I are talking about these:
      Lizard Skins Clear

Madd I know what your talking about….That stuff costs $7.00 for that little amount of 3M scotchguard tape…Essentially…You can get a whole roll of it for $14.00 or so at a UAP store..With that you can cut your own shape to exactly suit your bike.

Yeah, I know what you’re referring to as well…but the above is what my frame came with. if/when it wears off, I’ll buy bulk.

I keep a roll or two with me…I use that stuff on all the spots where the bike encouters abrasive stuff..

      Under the crank area.
      I surround both chain stays
Near the steering tube where the cables come in contact with the frame
Same with the fork and the brake hose near the crown of the fork

It is actually really easy to apply and you can’t see it when its done right…

This is absolute must for anyone who has a carbon bike…Carbon does not like any form of abrasion.

Can I put some on my skin for when I fall in Moab on the Slickrock? 😃

Which oddly enough, I haven’t…I fall a lot more here in Colorado.

Funny you mention that…I was thinking the same thing…Just yesterday I tanked the bike….wouldn’t you know it…The day I go out testing and think to myself….Naaa you don’t need protection is the day I go down on an elbow and remove 3 square inches of skin….

    • #83369

I kinda wish I had something there to protect it…

    • #83370

Yeah, a month or so ago I took a nasty digger and donated some skin on Centennial Cone, the easiest trail I’ve ridden all season.

Anyhow that 3M tape in my opinion is probably one of the best investments under $50.00 anyone can buy.

I may need some of that 3M for my Stumpjumper cable route underneath my bottom bracket,I turned my bike over to install a bash gaurd the other day and noticed that my front derailer cable and rear derailer cable have been rubbing each other and they have worn through. My Stumpjumper cable routing is not the best and I have read plenty of reviews that complain about the cable routing on the Stumpjumper’s.
I did find another way to route the cables so they are more uniform and less likely to rub, after rearrnanging them so they werent right next to each other,I actually took two of the cables out of the first two downtube cable brackets towards the head tube and only ran them through the last cable bracket so they werent rubbing each other, but I need to replace both cables now.So I may need the bulk like element suggests to cure any more premature cable rubbing/wear on my Stumpjumper cable’s.
Hey element,my Stumpjumper cable routing runs underneath the down tube, all three of them,I was thinking of taking the spark plug wire looms off the sprint car to keep em seperated so they dont wear on each other anymore, hahahahahaahaha.

IF your really keen…Find some larger diameter shrink tubing…Feed the cables through and then once you are happy with your routing you can heat shrink the cables…Which in the end prevent them from moving and the slightly softer plastic of the heat shrink will lessen the effects of cable rub…Just a thought…When I was in motorsports I had all my wiring done that way. everything was encased in shrink tubing….A bit expensive but well worth it.

Went to the local bike shop and bought the jumbo lizard skin. Fits much nicer than the last one I had. Thanks for all your input 😀
