Anyone have any suggestions for a good spot to camp on Memorial Weekend in Northern California? I’m looking for somewhere that has mountain biking, but also stuff for the non-riding family to do, like fishing/hiking/canoeing.

Around Tahoe is always nice with plenty to do but is always crowded on a holiday weekend. Another option is along highway 49 up towards Downeville, there are campgrounds all along the Yuba river. Past Downeville and north a little is the Gold Lakes area with numerous campgrounds and trails, the small community of Grey Eagle is near there for supplies or some activities.
Just looking out the window here and realizing how much snow we are getting this late in the year- there may still be a great deal of it still here by Memorial Day so something lower in elevation may be in order, will have to wait and see I guess.

I’ve rode the Downieville/Graeagle area, and I’m wondering about the snow also. This spring has been crazy, hasn’t it? Looks like we’ll be dodging snowbanks on the Downhill for a while this summer! I was thinking about Lake Oroville, but I guess there is no riding there currently. Another place I was kicking around is the Whiskeytown Reservoir.

Last Mem-day I tried to hike to the top of Sierra Buttes above Downevile and didnt make it due to snow, this year looks to be even more snow pack.
Ive never been to Whiskeytown… Oroville has some great hiking and a couple bike trails right around the lake but not much else.
Another option may be Lake Clementine, I have never stayed there but I know there are campgrounds down at the lake shore, and well you know about all the trails in the area. Check the state website as to when the campgrounds open for the summer – they might even stock that with fish to keep the kids busy ;)

also check the Bullards Bar reservor on Highway 49, a few riding trails there too.

Hmmm, Bullards Bar, that might be an idea, hadn’t thought of that one. One I camp at alot is Sly Park. Fun little trail, plus lots of rec opportunities for the wives and kids.

Clementine is our “home” trail, so we are looking for something different there. We love that ride, lot of fun!!

I need to try some up your way this summer. Is there a trail around Donner? My wife loves camping there (I never have).

Donner Lake is pretty cool, and they remodeled the campground there just last year, the only problem I have with staying there is it is so close to I80 it can be noisy. I will run up there after work at times during the summer to escape the heat down here as its usually 15 degrees cooler up there. There are several trails right around Truckee, some of which are reviewed here and quite a few that arenít, yet. Right from the campground you can access Coldstream Valley for plenty of forest service road riding and JPîs Trail – a really cool 6-8 mile single track. From the Sugar Bowl parking lot you can climb up Mt Judah and then drop a singletrack trail all the way back down to Donner lake – IF you can get past the maintenance guys for Sugar Bowl ;) Just over Donner Pass is the Hole in the wall trail that is pretty popular, if the family is into paved trail ridding take a drive 8 miles south on 89 to the Squaw Valley turn off, park there at the new park/playground or go up to Squaw Valley itself and ride the paved trail 6 miles along the river all the way to Tahoe City. The trail continues on from there south around Lake Tahoe for another 10 miles or better if your so inclined.
Check out The Backcountry bike shop in Truckee for more local info- 1 mile from Donner campground right across the street from Wild Cherries Coffee where they have your morning kick-start ;)

Its crowded as heck in town but if you get the chance t come up to Mendo we have some of the coolest trails ever (if yoour an XC/trail rider). McCharacer (sorry i spelt that wrong) is a nice place to camp.

    • #69033

Hmm, thats an idea, I haven’t done any riding out that way. Might be a nice change.

    • #69034

Yea. heck, we mat even be able to meet up somewheres (and you can watch me eat crap, I’m good at that). Maybe I’ll get up the streingth/want to drag out out an MCCET camera!

Just as long as you dont mind riding with a crazy 15 year old! 😃

    • #69036

You’ll have to show me some good trails out that way. We try to get out to Fort Bragg once or twice a year.

    • #69037

Uhu! will do! hmm, once or twice? Wow, you’d be safer if it were 0 or -3 times a year. the hippies are everywhere.

    • #69038

Hey, watch out, Juan Gear says he’s an old hippie! (Probably accounts for his choice of a single speed) 😼

    • #69039

Rrrright. Then he’ll be looking at my “I am the one the SKI PATROL warned you about” sticker on the back of my helmet A LOT! 😼 😄 😼 😼

If you want to go where there is almost no-one around, try Boggs Mountain Demonstration Forest in Cobb, Lake County, Ca. Camping is free, 30 miles of bike/hike trails and Middletown/Clear Lake are close by.

Excuse the mess please! its still taking shape!

its a free resource for camping info… for northern california… its not 100% yet, but we have added 250 campsites so far…

It has the following counties listed thus far…
del norte, humboldt, mendocino, siskiyou, trinity, shasta, modoc, and lassen…

Best of all, as soon as I get off my lazy butt.. i will add the user comments / rating / pictures section…

have fun.. and explore norcal! 😎

    • #69042

      Nice.
Great idea, I am constantly looking for campgrounds ect. listed on a map that dont exsist – and finding campsites that arent on a map. Ill be checking in often.

    • #69043

Nice job, I like the site, thanks!

    • #69044

      Thanks for the encouragement!… 😎

Its good to know that others find it useful and not too confusing…

Feel free to send me some recommendations… 😃

I’m considering having a members area where members can add sites that they find / know about…

What do you guys think? what does the site need?
      (besides a face lift!… haha)

Don’t forget about Tripleblaze.com/Camping. It’s set up just like singletracks, you can add, review, etc. but with campgrounds. Tripleblaze has more than 360 campgrounds in California alone:

      California Campgrounds

You can even use your singletracks login to keep track of wishlists, places you’ve been, etc. Many campgounds are also linked with trail listings (and vice versa) so you can camp where you bike.

ahh.. thats cool.. i didnt realize that singetraks was affiliated with a camping site…

the neat thing about what i am going for is this:
a community driven camp site… on just Northern California… with more than 249 campgrounds in Northern California alone (and growing)…

i think that the web is big enough for the both of us… 😎

      have fun… [url:1hgfoyuq]http://www.explorenorcal.com[/url:1hgfoyuq]
