The family and I are considering a July vacation to Breckenridge, CO.  What’s anyone’s take on riding in Breck and what trails would you recommend??  Kenosha Pass to Breck is highly ranked although I’m concerned about ride time.  I can’t expect to leave the family for a 5-8 hour epic ride.  I’m looking for great 2-4 hour rides, advanced/intermediate skill level, backcountry, XC, enduro but NOT interested in bike park/jumps/drops full face helmet downhill style trails.  I typically go to Crested Butte but we’ve discussed mixing it up and going to Breckenridge because of the more kid friendly attractions.  There’s a lot of Breckenridge trails listed on here, but some extra insight and narrowing it down would be greatly appreciated.

Best option for a great loop that won’t be so long as to get you in hot water with the family is up to Peaks Trail, Peaks to Gold Hill and return on the Frisco to Breck Bike Path.

Another goodie, easily accessable from town is up Boreas Pass Road to Baker Tank Trail, down Baker Tank to Aspen Alley to Blue Creek back into town

You can also do the  Breck end of the Kenosha to Breck segment of the Colorado Trail as an out and back.   Just ride up as long as you have time for and bomb back down.

How much does your family like you?  I’ve went out there with mine a few times and they’re pretty awesome.   If you’re in Colorado and they can shuttle you a bit that’s awesome.  My wife shuttled me to Bakers Tank, actually all the way up Boreas Pass Road.  The kids loved the short hikes around there and the drive up is super fun!  So you can mess around with the family and take some sweet rides down.

-Take Bakers Tank to Aspen alley, then over the Blue River Trail for an out and back and then back to the ice rink trails.  Or Barney Flow down is nice too.

-If your wife likes coffee, Peaks Trail to Frisco is a must-d0, then meet her at a coffee shop or brewery in Frisco as the bike path back is a slow slog.  There’s also a free bus from Frisco to Breck (Summit Stage) so you can self shuttle a bit.

-One loop that’s pretty cool is Burro Trail up to the Wheeler Trail (or get dropped off up that way).  Wheeler Trail will be a lot of hike a bike!  Once the Wheeler Trail gets really high you can either descend to Copper Mountain on the Wheeler Trail ( which is also part of the CO trail, epic downhill run, enduro style) or ride up high on the ridge on the Colorado Trail towards the Peaks Trail if you like rocky.  Once you get to the Peaks Trail you can take it back to Breck, or take it into Frisco, or continue ahead on the Colorado trail over Gold Hill to the bike path.  Lots of choices!

-Keystone has kids activities and a sweet bike park with lots of downhill XC (by Colorado standards) if you want a day of bike park runs.

I’ve been to both locations and love them both.  Breck is better for families as there is more to do depending on ages and interests and the food choices are amazing but a little less of a backcountry feel than CB (you can get backcountry if you want but Crested Butte seems to have epic solitude.) Also there might be an event or two in Breck, I did the 32 mile race at the Breck 100 one year just to have a marked course of trails I haven’t tried before.
