Monterey, CA resident here. Just picked up a Giant NRS3 about 3 months ago and am hooked! I’ve been exploring Fort Ord Public Lands every chance I get.

A couple buddies and I want to take a backpacking/camping/mountain biking trip over a long weekend (4 day trip, including travel time). I know it’s short, but that’s all the days we could manage with work.

I was thinking Oregon or Utah – basing that on zero knowledge of either area, but a desire to get out of the state. Do you have any suggestions/experiences? Note that "backpacking/camping" is very loosely used – could be way out in the wilderness or car camping with awesome day rides.

      Thanks!

A backpacking bike trip sounds like a good idea. I thought the same thing once. I found it to be grueling and it sucked the fun out of the riding. Hauling all the gear and supplies you need on a bike is difficult especially if you haven’t invested in super light weight gear. Several years ago myself and 3 friends tried a 1 night backpacking/bike trip in the hills of Southern Indiana. It was much tougher than we thought it would be (our major access trail being flooded out didn’t help much). With the same group we did the drive-camp-bike outing and had a much better time. We didn’t have to worry about shaving weight. We didn’t have to haul our gear on our backs. We spent more time riding and having fun around a camp fire.

      Just one opinion.

      Have fun!

Yeah I thought about the amount of work that would go into hauling all the gear – definite benefit with the drive-camp-bike route.

Anyone have experience with some great places to do that in Oregon? I’m not sure if 1 day traveling there, 2 days riding, and 1 full day traveling back will be enough for Moab!

My favorite area on earth is the St George area, like it better than Moab when Gooseberry Mesa and Little Creek Mountain and Zen Trail are included. Epic tech descents at Flying Monkey and Grafton Mesa. utahmountainbiking.com for trail info.
Word of caution, St George is conservative. A church edict against facial hair may cause you to face some descrimination. I have several times and have a beard.
Gooseberry is the most fun trail I’ve ever found and Little Creek isn’t far behind but slightly mellower but harder to find.
If you want distance, check out the Virgin River Rim Trail, 32.5 miles long, 4000′ of steep climbing, high altitude. Ties into Navajo Lake and Brianhead trails.
Tons closer to you at Tahoe and big fun Downieville’s 5000′ descents.

Check out Oakridge or Bend Oregon. 2 days would not be enough at either place but would be a fun start.

The place in Oregon on the top of my ‘Must Ride’ list is North Umpqua Trail. 79 miles long, divided into sections. I’ve ridden beautiful McKenzie River Trail and everyone who’s ridden both say this one’s even better.
