I am getting a new bike soon and was considering ditching the original deore crankset for a raceface. I am thinking of getting one with a bash gard for the all mountain bike. I do enjoy alot of downhill but do a bit of cross country and climbing as well. The only set up I have rode was 44,32,22 and I see I can get 32,22 with a bash. However I see I can get 36,24 with a bash. I am curious if the 36,24,bash would be a better option so I have a little be larger of a ring in case I am ever in a situation where I could have used the 3rd ring. However I am not sure how it will preform in granny for climbing, after all its only 2 rings. I am also looking into a chainguide with the bashguard crankset. I don’t know much about the chainguides either and some of the ride I have have tall rocks and roots, etc. Any thoughts?

It’s a pretty small difference either way.

Basically the 36/24 setup would be like adding another smaller cog to your rear cogset and taking away your largest rear cog.

If you do A LOT of small-cog-front/large-cog-rear (granny gear) riding you [i:3jgd41hg]might[/i:3jgd41hg] miss having the old setup. On your current setup, it will feel like riding in the small cog up front and the [i:3jgd41hg]2nd[/i:3jgd41hg] largest cog in the rear for your new granny gear.

You will also be missing out on your 2-3 highest gear ratios used for faster riding. Try riding around in the large cog up front and on your 2nd or 3rd [i:3jgd41hg]smallest[/i:3jgd41hg] gear in the rear to feel the difference between your current big front/small rear combination and what your new setup will feel like.

You should still have options for most of the other gear ratios that you could have reached with the old setup. They may not be the exact same gear ratio but it will be close.

Look for the new Sram XX or X.7 2×10. Using 2 front cog and 10 rear chainwheels. It is designed exactly for you. Front there are 42/28 and 39/26 teeth and rear cassette PG1050 comes 11-32 and 12-36… 😕 I don´t know about bashguards…
