They are forming a National Mountain Bike Patrol unit in my area. One of the people signing up for the training asked me if I was interested in it. Just don’t know enough about it yet. He said it was kind of like a ski patrol for bikes. Any thoughts from current or former NMBP riders?

I rode a couple days with one of these guys last spring in Moab, not sure what all the requirments are but he had the day-glow vest on and just made sure he had the basics every time he hit the trail- first aid kit, extra tube, lots of patches, basic tools and I think a GPS- that kind of stuff. The willingness to help out fellow riders, weather strangers or not would probably come in handy. Im not positive on the level of first aid training he had but Im sure there is some requirment there also.
All in all it sounded like a pretty cool gig for someone who got to ride a lot.

If I could afford to live on the money it would be a very cool job.

Hey CCR, check out the IMBA website. They have all the details there about the patrol. There are a few different levels. I was thinking seriously about it since I used to be an EMT, still have a valid CPR cert. and usually carry all the recommended gear anyway… I am also hoping to get my chainsaw cert. this month. I have to take some more first aid training for that, might as well add some more 😃 I’m already a member of IMBA and have read about the patrol several times.

I was mistaken about this being a paid postion. Last year sometime I read in a magazine that in Scotland there were job positions open for National Mountain Bike Patrol personel. The pay was low but for someone going to school part time this could have been a great job. Getting paid to ride your bike around on trails all day would be a dream if you could afford to live a fairly comfortable life. Looks like this is just volunteer work here in the US.

Thanks Dan, ODN, and AA for the input. Yea after I posted this I read up some more on it on the IMBA website like ODN mentioned. They seem to cover it pretty well. I’m lame on bike repair and need the First Aid training. This all came about from getting my chainsaw certification this winter. I need the CPR / First Aid training and the Bike Patrol will be offering it to potential members. My only reservation on the patrol is the time and set schedule required. Plan on doing some trail clearing on our much neglected National Forest trails and don’t want to spread myself too thin. Still thinking about it though.

AA – didn’t want to burst your bubble. Ride a mountain bike and get paid for it. Just too good to be true. 😆 I haven’t figured that one out yet.

Let me know when you do and I’ll apply. 😛

I thing like this would be geared more towards a physically fit retired biker.
