Just an open letter of thanks. Don’t know how many of you are still around. But thank you so much for the work you did back in the 1930’s and early 40’s. I think most were looking for 3 meals and a cot. But the work you did was phenomenal. Trails and State Parks all over our country are here because of you. Thanks!

One of my favorite riding areas, Douthat State Park with 40 miles of trail and many more outside of the park on National Forest was built solely by the CCC. I think Mongoose mentioned the same about parks in Florida.

Monument for the First CCC camp ever, Camp Roosevelt. Monument on the right is for the first resident.

These folks built gnarly stuff before the word was invented. This is likely one of their first trails on Massanutten Mountain in Virginia just on top of the ridge from Camp Roosevelt. I’ll bet they never imagined we would ride our bikes on stuff like this.

Post here if you have some CCC treasures in your area.

Yea Steve. Both of those trails are cool. Massanutten Mountain is located in the Shenandoah Valley and may just be the rockiest ridge in the state. Rocks are mostly embedded so they behave and don’t move under you as crest over the top – hehe rock surfing. Probably would be good single speed ride so you don’t have to worry about knocking something loose.

Mountain Side Trail in Douthat is a buff shaley sidehill ride that almost has a western US feel about it..

My favorite CCC trial is Sandy Gap north of Douthat on the GWNF. Must have had a good cook at that camp cause these guys moved tons of rocks building this trail. Most other trails went around the rocks as best they could – this one they went through and built the trail up as they went. Incredible stuff. Leaves cover up a lot in this pic, but you get the idea.

Steve – any CCC stuff in Colorado that you know of?

North Cheyenne Cañon Park in Colorado Springs, CO was created by the CCC and they built many of the trails there. At the top of High Drive where Captain Jacks crosses there is a plaque with the elevation and some info on the CCC group that built the trails. Wish I had a photo…

Thanks Trek7k for answering that question, especially since I could not have answered it,hahahahahaha.I was born in colorado springs but did not grow up there, dont even remember being there because I was like 3 or 4 months old when my parents moved back to Denver.
Anyways, thanks for the information, and I’ll plant that little seed of info in my mtn bike flower pot so it grows to be big and strong. 😃

I can tell you that Red Rocks Ampitheatre was built by the CCC as well as Rim Rock Drive thru Colorado Natl Monument.

There are other trails thru teh Poudre Canyon and Rocky Mtn NP that we have the CCC to thank for also.

I think I know the part you’re talking about – I had the same thought when I rode there too. Maybe this pic shows the sections a little better:

Trees I like, leaves I can do without. Our riding season goes from the best of the year with leaf color, to the worst of the year with leaf fall in about 2 weeks. Nothing like trudging through a foot an a half of fresh leaves to take all your momentum and strength away.

You folks in the West have the spectacular scenery. I drool over Crested Butte. Whats that trail 441 or 411, man that scenery is just out of this world.

Trek7, thanks for the pic on Mountain Side. That trail is dry and has lots of scrubby pines and always reminds me of the West. Couple more pics from Mountain Side Trail.

I heard the Boy Scouts just rebuilt Mountain Side Trail, but I haven’t checked it out yet. Boy Scouts rock too. 😀

Thanks Maddslacker. Thats the one I was thinking of. Just went back and looked through all the pics – and drooled some more. Definitely got to do that one sometime. Meadows, flowers, big mountains and sweet singletrack going through the middle of it. Probably doesn’t get any better thatn that. 😃
