Hello. I’m a 40 year old newb from Mississippi. I recently purchased a walmart mongoose 29er. Wasnt sure I would like this mountain bike thing so I wasn’t going to drop crazy money on a bike that I might not even ride. Well it goes without saying I tore this pos up pretty quik. I’ve been riding a friends felt q 720 for the last month or so while trying to save my pennies and make up my mind weather I want to try and build up this bike (the frame seems pretty solid, and the whole bike weighs 36 pounds.most of that is crappy components and forks that weigh at least 8 or9 pounds) or buy a new entry level bike. Also I have been combing craigslist and yesterday I saw this http://jackson.craigslist.org/bik/3172756903.html . What does every one think of that deal? I’m thinking the 19inch frame may be a little big for me. I’m 5′ 10". But the parts on that bike would be worth the price I would think. Sorry for the rambling post. Any and all suggestions are welcome

First, welcome to the site and sport!

The Rainer isn’t a high end bike, it’s pretty much bottom rung of what you’d find in an actual bike shop. Slight upgrade from the Mongoose, but, only slight.

How much are you willing to spend?

Yeah, I can’t /won’t afford a high end bike. I also have another hobby, motorcycling, my mind cannot process how any bicycle can be worth more than my ’03yamaha that is capable of doing 150 mph. Anyway. The rainier
looks like quite an upgrade to me.
Compare brakes, mongoose, pro Max mech disk, giant, avid bb7 I think.derailers, mongoose shimano tourney rear, no brand whatsoever front.giant, shimano deore front and rear. I don’t know what kind of hubs or axles that the giant has but its got to be better than the mongoose, as that’s what I broke on it first, and the big one to me the forks, the mongoose has zoom!!!!! Forks with an awesome 48mm of travel, the giant has marzocchi 100mm fork I’m not looking to get a 4000 dollar bike I just want something that I’m gonna have fun on and not break or cuss everytime I go to the trail. I’ve only been riding for 4 months. Not willing or able total spend more than entry-level money yet.@

A buddy of mine has an R1 and feels the same way lol.

I think it’s a good deal for what it is, and it should handle you okay. Just make sure it fits right!

Cheers to your r1. Buddy. I have a Fz1, kindof A sporty standard bike. But anyway I’m gonna go check this bike out tomorrow if the guy still has it. I’ve read pretty good reviews on it as an entry-level bike and its less than my walmart gooser was

I would suggest stop in into your LBS (shop around because some shops may not do MTBs or not very knowledgeable) not only to start relationship but to also see what the have in used or demo bikes.
