Just read the latest review on the Pinhoti trail, brought back memories and made me laugh. You guys should really come do the 2011 Snake Creek Gap TT It’s awesome.

Awesome in a "you’re an idiot for riding a bike over all of that in this kind of weather" sort of way 😆

I did all three races this year, 17 mile on a rigid single speed.

Jan – 3hrs5mins – temp was below 20*F all day.
Feb – 2hrs50ish mins – it was wet.
Mar – 2hrs45mins – perfect weather and conditions, I didn’t feel very good that day though, should have been faster.

In Jan. I got passed by Thomas Turner (34 mile racer, pro). He passed me like I was tied to a tree. Very humbling experience lol.

It’s a great event. Pay once, come to all three races. Lots of cool people, good swag, good post ride chili, AMAZING post ride peach cobbler. And of course, a heck of a test of your mtn bike abilities. Both fitness and handling skills.

I’ll be back again in 2011, again on the single speed, possibly with a suspension fork this time around. And maybe, just maybe, I might try the 34 mile 😼

      Rigid SS ???????
You are a sick, sick man!!!
I have to ask, did you also feel like the last two miles were mostly hike a bike?
I felt like I was going to fall off the side of the mountain on some of that stuff.
That’s the first time I’ve ever wished I had shin and arm guards when doing a regular XC ride.

There wasn’t too many sections I had to walk because it was too technical, most of it I could ride (often times very slowly haha). But yeah, there are a few hairy spots in the last few miles where I’d put a foot down here and there. Each race I rode more than I did the month before, this place WILL improve your riding.

I had problems getting caught behind geared riders on the climbs. They’re happily spinning away in the granny gear up the hill and I’m attacking hard as I can just to keep moving and there’s not enough room to safely pass…so I’d have to get off and walk. You can only ride a single speed so slow, and you can’t get started again on a steep hill. There is one section known as The Wall that’s CRAZY steep and rocky and everyone walks it.

I used a 32×21 gear ratio on my 29er this year, next year I’m going a bit easier with a 32×22, which should help with the climbs and low speed rock crawling.

"The Wall." I can definitely guess where that section is. About 2 miles out from the cell towers. Yeah, I walked all but the first 20 feet up that monster and was exhausted the rest of the trail. I’d pay money to watch someone clean that. I was worn out just hiking it! The first 14-15 miles weren’t too tiring but everything after that hike was like slow death. Sections I would have happily tried earlier suddenly became much less appealing. Finnally seeing those cell towers through the trees and knowing the end was near felt like getting a last second pardon from death row!
