Hey everyone, I am currently in the process of building a mountain bike (Ragley Blue Pig). I have never done anything even similar to such a project. My question today concerns the shimano SLX M665 double 22/36t with bash guard crankset I have. I just learned that this is a 2×9 compatible crankset, however I have already ordered a 10 speed Shimano M771 rear cassette and SRAM X7 2×10 shifters. Is this going to work or did I just make a big mistake? I read on bikeradar that it seems to work fine when used as a 2×10 but I just don’t know what parts where used and stuff. I also am concerned about what chain is going to be appropriate now since the cassette calls for a super narrow HG chain, basically will this kind of chain fit the crankset.
Thank you for all the help!!! -

Just for more information if someone could confirm my drivetrain setup will likely be:
SRAM X7 2×10 shifters
Shimano SLX double crankset M665
Shimano XT M771 10 spd cassette
SRAM X9 10 spd rear derailleur
Shimano XT front 2×10 derailleurI have not bought the derailleurs yet. Will this setup work?

Not sure if the XT derailleur will work with the X7 shifters. I knew you can’t mix all the SRAM/Shimano, but not sure what won’t work. Why don’t you stay with just one brand?
For the crankset. The 10-speed chain is smaler than the 9-speed, but as much as I know, it will work.Edit: It doesn’t work on the rear derailleur, only on the front

The XT front derailleur should be ok with the Sram shifters, it’s the rear that has the 1:1 pull ratio that differs from Shimano.
My question is why mix? the Sram X7 2×10 crankset is decent, or you could go XT/SLX all the way through.

Hey. thanks for reply. and sorry for the late reply. I forgot i posted this question and now that I need my bike done I really need to figure it out. Are you saying this will not work because so far I have everything but the derailleurs and I hope I do not need to buy new shifters. Why mix? I read in a magazine that it was the new thing. since the shimano cassettes and chain are better than sram and most people seem to like srams shifting feel better.
PLease can anyone tell me if this system will work. I can’t find it anywhere!

Also, the mixing has alot to do with price! I have managed to save a bit and I think the system will work nice. Why not mix is the question. Everyone says that sram and shimano are totally compatible except you need the same shifters and rear derailleurs. That pretty much says you might as well mix them! But again, I have never built a bike and know nothing lol… just been reading forums for that last couple months none stop

Sram and Shimano are compatible on the front.
They are not compatible on the rear.
Make sense?

Yes, that is exactly what I understand!! so for instance my sram X7 shifters will work with a sram X9 rear derailleur and should work with a sram or shimano front derailleur?
Do you think my system will work then? -

That should work, assuming the whole setup is either 9-spd or 10-spd, again, those don’t mix.
