Just got a norco A-Line small. Im 5" so I am going to put 24s on it for my short legs. My question is what would be a good set? Im an intermediate rider, no big jumps. Would it be better to build them? Im looking for middle of the road pricing maybe no more than $ 400 for both complete.

      Thanks

On a bike designed for 26" wheels, won’t 24" wheels cause the crank arms and/or chainring to hit the ground?

It’ll get them close, and you’ll be smacking pedals on roots and rocks a lot. It’s a bad idea IMO. You shouldn’t have to change wheel sizes to make a bike fit. My wife is 5’1" and can ride a XS WSD Giant with 26" wheels – and they even make a size smaller.

And why did you get a DH/Freeride bike if you’re not doing jumps or anything??

My 4’11" 10 year old daughter is comfortable on my (former) small Giant Trance. I just installed a 70mm stem and cut the seatpost down to about 250mm.

its good to see other shorties are okay on a small, Im only jumping small stuff now, and I doubt I will go too big. I wasnt defiantly going to do it, I just wanted to get some ideas for now

my 11 yr old (and he’s not big) has a 24" kona stinky and he may just get by another yr on it, so i’m not sure you’d be comfortable with a 24" bike. try one for size at your lbs before committing to a new wheelset.

if you still feel 26" is too big try either an xs frame or a 24" rear wheel only (used by some dh riders). the proper frame is better than the 24" rear, imho, but i’m not a dh specific rider. changing only the rear wheel will have less impact on the bb height, but the trade off is a more slack geo on an already dh specific bike. if you’re a shuttle monkey, you could love it.

another issue is finding 24" tires. there are some burley 2.5+ dh specific tires at 24", but tire selection is rather limited for anything else.

again, with the a-line’s beefy 9" travel frame, it’s pretty much a dedicated dh sled. if that’s where you’re riding’s headed, big ups, a 24" rear and big meaty rubber could be just the ticket for you.

24’s are not a great ideal for that bike, it will only cause issues down the road. As per 24’s, I would not fly that way unless you are going to be shredding the DJ’s, but even then, not with that bike. The A-Line and B-Line were designed for 26’s and are designed for big jumps, big drops, and rugged terrain at higher speeds. A-Line is an all out DH bike, and the B-Line is a hardcore FR bike by design, and also heavy as well for just all around riding. If you want to fly with a bike with 24’s, then stick with frames that are designed for the 24’s or 24/26’ers (frames designed for either 24’s or 26’ers or a combination of both). Few frames designed anymore that are 24/26’ers these days.

Anyways, great bike for the money! Big guys/gals that are riding 24’s are guys/gals that like the feel of the 20" but are too big, so they fly with the 24" bike to get the best of both worlds for the DJ’s. Also, the 24’s are a drag for the DH, though I have seen riders try it, but they do not fly in regards to control, speed, or stability.

The 26’s will do for you, just adjust the bike around to fit you, though not much adjusting tolerance on those DH sleds…LOL. Good luck!

Seems like a really bad idea to put 24" wheels on a bike made for 26" and really should not be necessary. My daughter who is 4′ 11" has no problem with her old Trek with 26"

This is my 11 yearold son on his xs Giant Boulder, it has 26" wheels, unless your smaller than him you should have no problems with 26’s

My 12 year old can easily ride a 26", but he rides a 24" because of his shredding as a FR, but all in all, 26" is the ticket and just make adjustments.

I have to agree with ‘ADY’ (adonai) here with his comment, as it is very true.

Hey! How is Joco doing nowadays?

I wouldn’t fly with 24" because of warrenty issues on top of what they said.
