Hey everyone –
Apologize for the long post. I pulled my old specialized hard rock out of the garage after 6 years and have been getting back into mt biking hardcore. I’ve been going 4-5 days a week for the past few months and after riding some friends full suspension bikes i’m in the market for an upgrade. I’d rather buy something fairly nice now and not have to upgrade for a long time. This 06 Trek Fuel EX 9 is for sale in my area and i would love it if people would weigh in with their comments regarding components, overall recommendations, etc since i’m just getting back into the MTB world:

2006 Trek Fuel EX 9.0. in 17.5" frame size (medium) Purchased for $3,300.00. Regularly maintained by LBS for finicky owner and is freshly tuned. Excellent condition with some minor scratches. Seems like it’s a bit pricey to me. I bought a 2007 ex8 brand new from the LBS [i:2h0owvbo]last [/i:2h0owvbo]October for $1758. They just got the new models in and were selling the old stuff at decent prices. I’ve seen people get them as low as $1300 as recently as May of this year.
For the money, I would wait and do the same in October again with the new 2008 models. They put a REALLY nice upgrade in the Advanced Braking Pivot and the full floater system on the 2008s. I’ve read a LOT about the new system from riders and it seems to be the real deal, not just marketing hype.
The main differences in a 2006 and a 2007 model is the rear chainstay pivot on the 2007. It definately adds some bump absorbtion. I’ve read them both and I’m happy I got the 2007 with the updated rear triangle.
It’s not a bad bike by any means. It’s just priced way too highly. You can get something with a much better suspension setup and components for that range.
