Mountain Biking Sycamore Canyon

****   Add a review
#197 of 1,005 mountain bike trails in California
#2,722 in the world

There are many trails in Point Mugu State Park. Many do not allow

mountain bikes, so become familiar with the trail maps before you

take off. The route described below assumes you park outside the

park entrance. Mileages begin after you turn off PCH. Other routes

are possible; this route gets you onto the two sweetest sections of

singletrack the area offers.

Details: min elevation = 35 feet. Max elevation = 1237'. Total

elevation gain = 1615'. Length of ride = 16.2 miles.

Bike through the Point Mugu State Park campground to the beginning

of the Big Sycamore Canyon Road. This smooth doubletrack is a good

warm up and gives you a good chance to look around.

@ mile 4.6 turn left onto Ranch Center Fire Road. Shortly after turning

onto this road, you have the option of turning right onto the Sage Trail

sinbgletrack or continue on the Ranch Center Fire Road. Both will bring

you up to the Ranch Center Road. Turn left.

@ mile 5.64 you will begin a fast and fun descent down the Wood

Canyon Fire Road.

@ mile 7.35 turn right on the Guadalasca singletrack. Watch for this;

you might be having too much fun and can blow right by it. Note: if

you miss this corner you'll end up at a junction that will allow you to try

your luck at climbing "Hell Hill." No one seems to really enjoy either

climbing or descending this - so what's the point. Guadalasca Trail, on

the other hand is a long and beautifully engineered climb. Do it! By

the time you reach the top at mile 10 you will have fallen in love with

this trail and will want to turn around so you can descend it. Keep that

thought and plan to come back. For now keep going because there's

another great descent waiting.

@ mile 11.2 you come to a three-way junction with the Wood Canyon

Fire Road, the Overlook Fire Road, and the La Jolla Valley Fire Road.

Keep going on the Overlook Fire Road a little bit further.

@ mile 11.27 turn left onto the Wood Canyon Vista singletrack. You'll

be amazed at how quickly you end up back at the bottom on the Big

Sycamore Canyon Road. Note: If you stay on the Overlook Fire Road

you'll have a longer, scenic "backbone" ride with big views. This road

will also bring you back to Big Sycamore canyon Road near the

campground.

Getting there
Big Sycamore Canyon is in Point Mugu State Park. Drive either north or

south on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to get to the park entrance. It's

about 25 miles north of East Malibu. There is a day use parking fee in

the park so many locals choose to park along PCH (where permitted) and

bike into the park for free.
