Mountain Biking Mavora Lakes

***   Add a review
#148 of 387 mountain bike trails in New Zealand
#8,273 in the world

This is an overnight camping ride on gravel roads to the remote and beautiful Mavora Lakes with a crossing of Lake Wakitipu on the historic steamboat Earnslaw.

One of Queenstown's most interesting outings is to go to Walter Peak Station on the grand old lady of the lake, the steamboat Earnslaw. At Walter Peak Station there's a kind of farm-circus for the tourists which is well worth a look.

Riders can take their bikes on the boat and from the jetty at Walter Peak Station it's a 53 km ride to the Mavora Lakes with gorgeous scenery all the way. You can camp overnight or longer at the lakes or even bike on further to some huts. Next day (or next week!) you can ride back to the steamboat and Queenstown or on to Te Anau which is a little over 60km away.
