This is a fantastic beginner loop. The woods are pleasant, and being at the top of the mountain range, but still in the trees, it can be a pleasant ride when Albuquerque is scorching hot.
The trail definitely rides best counterclockwise, although that does make for one rocky climb that will cause most beginners to dismount, but it does give a fun, swoopy downhill with some nice little berms.
It's a 'reverse profile' meaning the downhill comes early and then you have to climb back out. But the climb is only about 250 vertical feet and the grade never exceeds 5%, so it's an easy climb.
There are two connectors at the west end of the loop that leave the Open Space and connect with the much larger USFS trail network. For advanced riders, the value of this trail is that it allows the addition of an additional for miles of high speed hammering to a much longer ride.
