Mountain Biking Horse Mountain

#870 of 1,368 mountain bike trails in Colorado

Start the climb (2 miles up) on an old road that is very loose rock. you will then be on horse mountain that is a little intimidating down hill. Once you are down the mountain you can keep going south for miles on Desert loop which has lots of roller coster type hills. or you can turn right and stay on Horse mountain to make a loop. I've been riding up there for years. I stay away from "horse mountain" it's super rocky. I have two loops I like from 36 5/8 RD trailhead both start with the gulch grind but it means you get to finish with fun downhill! Loop1-Ride up the gulch to the overlook. Drop down and stay riding south on dirt road for a few miles then it forks west and returns to bottom of overlook. I call this The Luge it's fun. Loop 2-Before you reach the overlook take powerline road heading west up and around a smaller mountain. You will end up back at the base of the overlook hill. Good short workout. There is much more to explore but usually stick to what I know is going to be a good ride. Hope to see someone out there someday.

Getting there
From downtown Palisade, cross G Road/Highway 6 and take 38 Road across the Colorado River to F 1/4 Road. As you continue to travel west, you'll be forced to turn left and this will flow into F Road. Make a left turn on 36 5/8 Road. Again, you'll be forced to turn left and this will flow into 36 3/4 Road. Soon you will reach E Road. Turn left and park on the BLM land at the end of the road.
