This review is for the Range trails bounded by Bay Road in South Amherst, Rt. 116 up and down the Notch in South Amherst to Granby, Batchelor St. in Granby and Harris Mountain Road in Granby and Amherst.
There is an intricate network of trails here, mostly used by hikers and rarely mountain bikers. A few areas are too steep, too muddy or too technical to ride, but much of this area is supremely rideable: rolling, at times steep terrain with testing climbs and wicked descents. A nice mix of some doubletrack and wide singletrack, deeply wooded, with somewhat rocky, very rooty, nice loamy surfaces. Until one is close to the Notch visitors center, it's rare to encounter anyone else on the trails.
Entering from various points off of Bay Road or Harris Mountain Road, you can ride west to the Notch, then across 116 to the superb, flowy and extensive Earl's Trails; or due south into the Batchelor Street trail system, a challenging and technical singletrack area.
