The Bullock Track is a very steep farm track that heads straight up to the tops of the Old Man Range above Roxburgh. The strange thing about the range is that the higher you go the flatter it gets - the tops are broad and rounded with schist outcrops scattered round. It's a remarkable landscape.
When you catch your breath you'll take in panoramic views over the town, Lake Roxburgh, the Clutha River and the flat river terraces covered with orchards.
The track is too steep to ride up. You can make a loop of the undertaking by going north along the path beside the highway for 5km then taking Mount Hope Road to the summit. That's a three hour granny gear grind that gains about 800 metres (2600 feet) to the top of the Bullock Track.
The surface of the Bullock Track is mainly grass - it is rarely used by vehicles. It is very steep all the way - try not to cook your brake pads as you come down! You're on a public right of way but there are gates to be left as you find them. This is a ride you do for fitness and altitude serenity rather than the riding pleasure.
