Mountain Biking Ashburton River Trail
#162 of 387 mountain bike trails in New Zealand
The main part of the Ashburton River Trail is a grade 2 (easy) loop about 9km long. There are lots of nice curves, berms, humps, swooping dips, and other non-threating technical features including a few wooden structures. There's also a few grade 3 detours off the main track. It's a wonderful ride for beginners and is interesting for riders of all skills. The trail is well looked after and there is good signage.
And there's more! There is a 20 km trail off the bottom of the loop that runs all the way down to the river mouth. It's a shared runner-biker trail that is wide, smooth and without technical features. It makes for an excellent fitness spin of about 40km down and back. It's mostly in dappled shade.
