Rider questions

Q: is the brake power instantly there or are they slightly spongy
A: I think the range of these brakes is excellent. Just make sure you "burn" them in properly.

Q: I have heard they ramp up and are inpredictable when running hot as the liquid expands. Is this what you mean by burn them in?

I recommend these over Avids any day, who needs a bike bell when you have avids...squeak, squeak.

    Pros
Great stopping power, low noise factor

    Cons
    none

I have had multiple of these over the years, only had one that malfunctioned which was due to a tiny screw falling out the bottom and the thing flew apart. Other than that they have been great. Always shifts smooth.

    Pros
    Great shifting, durable.

    Cons
    none

The Shimano XT disc brakes are an easy winner when comparing against other offerings. If you're budget is limited, I rate the Shimano SLX brakes higher in regards to value.

    Pros
    - excellent stopping power
    - easily adjustable
    - durable and reliable

    Cons
    - modulation

If you have the option, buy these. XTs are the best value Hydro set on the market today. I like the modulation of SRAM, but it's not worth the added potential for a lack of reliability.

    Pros
Excellent reliability, fantastic quality, looks great and stops you when you need it. Bleeding is fortunately not required very often for mineral oil, and lever stroke adjust is straightforward and easy

    Cons
Modulation is not as good as the competition, in fact in comparison it feels like only an on/off. The levers are also encouraging of a two-finger activation, but these are all compromises that are worth the extreme reliability.

I had some trouble when I first got these brakes, because I hadn't burned them in properly. There are many step-by-steps online to tell you how to do this. Also, brake pads contaminate extremely easily. I've had to clean and sand these twice now. I don't mind doing any of these because when these brakes are adjusted and clean, they work phenomenally.

    Pros
    Smooth braking, great range, sensitive.

    Cons
    Sensitive to dirt.

These brakes absolutely rule! They are so smooth that braking is effortless! I used to get hand fatigue pretty bad on long rides with my old BB7's, but never even close with these! They modulate nicely, so I never find myself accidently locking them up either like I used to with my mechanicals. Don't get me wrong though, if you feel like you need to lock them up, you can lock them up, you just don't need to go all Mach Man to get them to stick!

    Pros
    Stopping Power
    Modulation
    Smooth
    Well Built
    Easy to Bleed

    Cons
    None.

def buy shimano brakes... SLX are just as good if you are on a budget... in my opinion, don't waste the funds on xtr. XT's and some nice rotors... boom done...

    Pros
One finger braking ends the discussion......

    Cons
the finned brake pads are expensive to replace..

Best brakes i've owned. Skeptical after Shimanos prior offerings, i drank the kool-aid and got these brakes. I didn't think anything would provide me the stopping power of my previous brakes, Hope M4, i was proven wrong. I like that the system uses mineral oil, and is remarkably easy to bleed. They look great on the bike and i love that i can direct mount my shifters to them.

    Pros
Power. Modulation. Servo wave. Mineral oil. Easy to bleed. Lightweight.

    Cons
    None

Love these brakes for a trail / AM bike. Good pad life (go icetech), good modulation and stopping power.
The split clamp also is a nice touch for service and bar removal.

    Pros
Excellent modulation and power for a brake at this price level..
great feel to the lever and once set up you have a firm, stroke with no spongy feel to it at all..Why go XTR when these are just as good..just a few grams heavier.

    Cons
    none

Definately recommend. Just decended over 7000 feet on some technical terrain and they did not miss a beat.

    Pros
Great Stopping Power, Incredible Control, What the previous review said about adjustments. Simply a pleasure to use. Using Avid Clean Sweep rotors 160mm but am going to try the Ice Tech.

    Cons
    None

Compared to my old brakes I have more than 25% increase in stopping power, the 2 finger pull is nice. Positioning the levers was easy and with the tool-free reach/stroke adjustable of the lever blades allows you to adjust them for a comfortable fit. All aspects of this system have been easy, from removing and replacing the brake pads to set up and adjusting the brakes. I have had no squealing on long descents and with little or no modulation. The brakes have awesome stopping power. Best upgrade I have given my bike.

    Pros
    Easy set up and adjustments,
Tool-free reach/stroke adjustable of the levers,
    Awesome stopping power
