Given their faults, I keep coming back to Crank Bros. pedals because they work so well in so many ways that it outweighs the negatives.
Pros I am a big fan of the engagement and retention system that these pedals employ, They offer a tiny amount of float and I find that I don't have issues of accidentally clipping out when riding technical trails or making hard climbing efforts like a do with Shimano SPD pedals. I also use these for cyclocross because I find that the disengagement is less prone to snagging than the SPD pedals are. Pedals are easily rebuildable.
Cons Pedals are easily rebuildable which is good because you will be rebuilding them quite often (don't let your friends with Shimano SPD pedals get a clue about how often you rebuild these or you'll never hear the end of it). The bearings have always been a weak point with these pedals and I recently upgraded to their newest bearings which are backward compatible with all of their pedals. I'm hoping that their longevity is MUCH better than the previous bearings.
I use these on my road bike (use Candy 1 on my mtb). The pedals supply enough coverage on my foot for long rides with out any issues. I can clip in and out with no problems. Not to mention the orange color looks great. Great for both road and offroad. Get a pair!
I have had these for a couple of years now, and I have to say, I really love the extra support from the surrounding platform. That extra bit eliminates almost all hot-spots and helps protect the mechanism from rock strikes. You hear people complain about CrankBrothers, but their customer service department is a joy to deal with.
Pros Float
Easy to clip
Solid build
Easy to rebuild
I was running Shimano's but was meaning to get back and try the Candy line. I got a new 29er, so I thought it would be a good time, and I will order these for the 26 as well. No pop out, and great pulling power. No issues getting out, and great from day one.
