After losing my 1996 M.U.L.E. I had to buy a new one. I had the regular bag, but decided to upgrade to the lumbar model. The feel is the same as its older counterpart, with an added pad for the back and some pockets on the waist belt.

Camelbak claims an improved air flow with the backpad. I've been riding in cooler winter weather (Florida winter) and I'm still finishing with a sweaty back. I don't see any improvement in that. I'm sure that this newer model wont be any different from my older bag in the summer. It's not a big deal, just not what the brand claims.

found three great improvements in the newer model. First, the tool pack that folds up and fits into a pouch in the main pocket. I have 2 CO2 pumps, tire levers, and a multi tool in this bag. With three pockets, everything is nicely organized.

The second feature that I liked was the addition of pockets on the waist belt. I put some gel and some bars in them. I can easily access my nutrition without having to take off the pack.

Finally the magnet snap on the water hose. So that the hose doesn't bounce around, there is a small clip that holds the hose attached to the shoulder strap. On my older model, I just cut my hose so there wasn't too much slack and would drink with my head turned to the right. Now, I can pull on the hose and it comes free of the clip so I can drink while riding. Then, I just let the hose dangle and with its magnetic clip, it snaps back together on its own. I was sceptical of this feature. But after trying it on the trail, I caught myself unsnapping the hose each time. Almost like "magic."

I did notice that if you don't unclip the hose, a crimp is created and it becomes hard to drink. So that tug is necessary.

TL;DR: Great bag, great new features, get it.

    Pros
Lots of room for food, tools, and spares.

    Cons
The newer models don't have the slim side pockets that were great for CO2 and hand pumps.

I really like the mule. Received as a gift for Christmas. Perfect size. Able to fit rain gear if needed and snacks plus plenty of water. Definitely a plus on longer rides. The adjustments on the straps allow you to carry higher or lower for comfort. I have had no issues with sweating underneath while here in Florida. The design allows for airflow underneath.

    Pros
    Well made

    Cons
    None

Ive had this pack for over 12 years now and it still is my go-to pack. The new models are different and look bigger. I love this pack...it has been to hell and back and still works like the day I bought it. I have replaced the bladder once...just because It was so grimy I didnt' want to clean it.

    Pros
Light, well made, large capacity for storage and water.

    Cons
Costly, decreased ventilation compared to newer models.

I would definitely recommend this pack to anyone who isn't doing an all day ride but still wants the space to carry a bunch of H2O and some trail tools.

    Pros
Holds plenty of water, durable, does not move around, carries plenty of water, has a rain cover, has a dedicated spot for cell phone or iPod, zippers are great quality, spot to hang keys.

    Cons
Storage is limited when the water reservoir is full.

I highly recommend this hydration pack. It has worked great for everything I need and I carry quite a bit of equipment with me for long rides. I have completed a few 6 to 8 hour rides and my back is still dry when I finish up for the day. While riding I honestly forget I'm wearing it.

    Pros
Tons of storage, durable, does not move around, carries plenty of water, has a rain cover, has a dedicated spot for cell phone or iPod, zippers are great quality, spot to hang keys.

    Cons
Although there is plenty of storage, it would have been nice to have a dedicated tool bag or storage area.

I have used the pack mostly in the winter, since it was a Christmas present. My wife also bought me the freeze-proof insulated water line (this was indeed an issue) as well as several other accessories. It has worked great - especially the extra room for spare clothes or whatever you want in the storage areas. Also includes a helmet hook-up so you can attach and carry your helmet on your back when you're off the bike. Overall very cool system.

    Pros
Large water capacity, large storage capacity. Well-thought-out pockets, zippers, etc. Would make a great day bag for a short overnight trip. Plenty of add-on options to purchase.

I ride in GA & in the summer, so having lots of water is always good. The backing help with airflow some. So instead of my whole back being sweaty, now it's just the contact points. I would definitely recommend this pack to anyone who isn't doing an all day ride but still wants the space to carry a bunch of H2O and some trail tools.

    Pros
    Large H2O Volume
Built-in Rain Cover is not bulky and is out of the way when not in use.
Back is designed to help air flow.
Plenty of expandable pockets for longer rides.

    Cons
The curve of the back makes it hard to fit other items in the large pocket.
Storage is limited when the water reservoir is full.
Might be to small if you need an additional jacket or change of clothes.

There should be a quick release button at the bottom of the water tube where it attaches to the reservoir?
